I don't think that would be a usable camera. If you put 8 megapixels on a full frame sensor (i.e. the same 3504x2336 of the 30D), you'd get a stunningly low 49 lpm sensor resolution. You would be limited to very tiny crops, and your sensor wouldn't be able to take full advantage of high resolution lenses (though it would still benefit from their improved microcontrast, distortion, flare, etc).

When measuring by resolved detail per unit area, the 5D already has the lowest resolution of any DSLR currently on the market at 61 lpm. I would by a 8MP FF for about the current 30D price immediately. I said earlier that this would be a perfect path for Canon to introduce FF into the consumer market.

I guess what I am most surprised about are no new EF-S announcements in the context of what Nikon and the third party manufacturers have introduced in terms of crop body focal choices in recent years (e.g. 18-135, 18-200, 50-150, 50-135, 10-17 etc.). New lenses in the last couple of years have been tilted toward high-end full frame users with the new 50 and 24-105 designs and the 85, 70-200 and 16-35 updates. The 17-55 (also targeted to the higher-end user) was introduced last May. Maybe the mid-range user will get something in the Spring.

Hmm, I've heard that the 40D will be see with at 10 megapixels and 6fps. The 7D may sport a 16mp sensor with revised AF/metering and the 1Ds III will be a 22 megapixel, 5fps full-frame version of the 1D III.

Read this in another forum, allegedly from Canon Japan, so take it with a grain of salt.

The 1Ds III and the 5D will appear in August/September, but unsure of the 40D.

I think a lot of beginners would jump for the FF 8 mp chip, that would be a great camera. Most of them don't need anything more than 5 fps or the rugged frame of the 1 series. Canon would sell tons, heck, it would be a great camera to take to the park.

I like the "one camera to rule them all". I'm itching to move up to the 1 series features, but right now the 1DsII doesnt have much over my 5D right now. The 1DsIII with 22mp, faster frame rate and an incredible increase in noise control and DR would be my camera. Then adding the crop mode and other 1 series features, could a man be happier (or woman)?

Just looked at my most recent Canon catalog pages and it looks like the 5D will drop a few hundred dollars as well as come out in a 25-105 "kit", the 30d will drop $100 on the body, and come out with a 28-135 "kit" instead of the 18-55. This all starts on March 1st.

i'm with ya. i'd be happy if it had the same noise levels as the 5D, elated if better. crop mode at higher fps would be icing on the cake and make the whole decision a complete no-brainer. except for the $$$ - oh well, life's too short to let that stand in the way. the sooner you buy it, the longer you get to wait before having to spend that much money again.

You need to remember, that right now, ALL Nikon digitals are crop cameras, so it makes sense that they are pushing glass intended for crop cameras. Realistically though, since all EF-S cameras, also take EF lenses, and Canon has 1.6 crop, 1.3 crop, and FF cameras as well, it makes sense to keep lens designs able to work with all the sensor sizes.

Hm, if it's true the 5DII comes out in fall, I guess I could wait.... but if it takes longer I won't make it. Got ready all it needs and really getting tingly about finally 'taking the plunge'.
As far as the 24-105 "kit" is concerned, I think that's on the market as long as the 5D is, here it's around $3500 right now. And since I need a standard zoom anyway.... *argh*

Canon has releasd at least one new EF-S lens every single year since 2003, starting with the 18-55 kit lens. I'm sure they have another EF-S lens scheduled for this year, but are holding it off so they can release it in conjunction with the newest APS-C camera model.

An EOS 40D + EF-S 18-200 I.S. splashed on the front pages of digital photography websites is going to catch a lot of attention. A lot more than just the 40D by its lonesome self.

There's really no blanks to fill. Canon will never put an L next to an EF-S lens. L lenses are considered professional level products, and it's quite clear that EF-S is not considered in that range as they don't mount to Canon's pro cameras.

As a side note, I cannot understand for the life of me why anyone would want such a lens. The IQ would be horrible with such a huge zoom range.

An EF-S 18-200 ?? IS? would be snapped up by your average consumer. The ability to have one walk around lens on your XTi and cover 95% of situations would prove very popular. Many consumers never upgrade past the the twin kit lenses anyway so having the superzoom would be a popular offering IMHO. Admittedly, IQ won't be great but worse than the kit?? And to directly compete with Nikon's offering I'm not sure why this lens doesn't already exist.
Not sure whether they would include IS though...

EF-S 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 IS, would be my guess.

I think IQ would be decent to good if stopped down to f/8.

Not my cup of tea though. Unless they demonstrate a superzoom with superb IQ and decent speed, eg a 24-200 f/3.5-4.5L IS, then it might be worth considering for travel, but that's not going to happen (soon).

I believe Canon has already given an "L" designation for the lens of one of their point & shoots. If they can do that, they can certainly do the same for EF-S lenses. If we ever see a EOS 40D weather sealed to compete with the D200 and Pentax K10D, do not be surprised to see a weather sealed EF-S "L" lens for the camera.

Makes perfect sense to me as a vacation camera. A superzoom lens would complement a set of primes very well.

Yes, the Pro 1. I own one and it is a camera that has its uses... but I've never felt that the lens was and L in more than name.
