Looks like that is it from Canon now until after PMA

Wow, that is disappointing. I was hoping for a new tele lens.

Long, sad and frustrating. What did we do before the internet and instant news to complain about? I did not even know what PMA was 30 years ago.

For all the 40d complaints, you had your turn last year when you got a 30d

All the more reason to complain. The 30D is certainly no reason to upgrade from a 20D. It's a classic stopgap. Obviously they put no effort into that upgrade, and it shows. If they don't come up with a 40D for PMA, they're nuts, IMO.

I really think they will split the 5D up into 2 camera's and do away with the 40D!! One ff, and one 1.3X. I thought 1.3X was gone..the way people were chating and thinking Canon was moving ALL fframe! However now with the 1d3 out and 1.3X is still here on a pro body at that. Just maybe! ?

How about a sticky thread on the B&S board for selling 1D Mark 2(N) and 16-35Ls. There are already quite a few listed

On a more serious note, any idea on the pricing on the 16-35L II? This is something I have my eyes on.

I have a feeling Canon isn't done announcing yet

Don't know about the other poster, but I was hoping for FF @ 12Mp & a crop mode. There are a lot of nice features to the DIII and I understand why PJ's aren't dying for FF.

Have to wait and see what happens w/ the DsIII or whatever the next FF is I guess.

Seems unlikely. The 40D would continue the "pro-sumer" line of EF-S compatible bodies, which means it needs a 1.6 crop sensor.

Personally I think the 1DMkIII is great news for this 20D owner. Chances are pretty good the MkIII will push (used) prices of the MkII below $2k and the MkIIN may drop to near where the MkII is now.

The 20D is a great camera, but the focus system of a 1DMkII for under two grand would almost be too tempting.

I understand the "I didn't get what I wanted for my birthday" sentiment among 30D users or 5D users or those who wanted a new long lens, but time is going to pass and everyone is going to get a product they want. Believe me, Canon wants everyone's money. They simply are not going to release every new product at once, and everyone isn't going to get the camera/lens of their dreams right this instant.

I think a little patience and perspective will result in happy times for everybody, but surely you can understand that Canon has a business strategy that isn't always going to align with every single customer's personal preference---how could it??

You can't please all the people all the time, it isn't physically possible. Even if the DIII isn't your own dream camera, you should be happy about the terrific design and features as it will certainly bode well for future camera releases. I would have preferred an updated 5D, but this camera kicks so much serious butt that I can't even muster the disappointment necessary to take away from my appreciation of the new DIII. This really is a great camera!! Way beyond the incremental tweaking that we sometimes see.

Well done, Canon. (now get me my 5D Mark II or 1Ds3!)

Those kits are only for UK market. Part of Canon EOS System's 20th anniversary promotion by Canon UK, not available elsewhere. Each country where Canon has a market share, the promotional style varies from one to the other.

I think this thread is more of a Post-1D3 Discussion thread than a Post-PMA thread. That said, my wishes have all come true in the 1D3... maybe Canon wants to delay the Next Big Thing to maximise "impact"?

Having different Canon promotions in different countries in Europe gives in principle more freedom of choice for customers at least inside EU.

In UK there are several kits with 5D, but one of them (5D + 24-105 f/4) has a different (white) box. That is because it is the same kit which has been available already for more than a year, whereas the other (red boxed) kits are new. The current (Finnish) price of the old kit is 609 EUR more expensive than the camera alone.

Just seen the prices for the 1dIII - $3999, and £3049 in the UK. This sort of thing really grates - by my reckoning $3999 translates to roughly £2100 - don't know what sort of sales tax there is in the US, but assuming there isn't any add on 17.5% VAT in the UK takes the equivalent price to £2500 - this implies a 20% increase in price.

Is there a similar differential in the rest of Western Europe or is it just us saps in the UK who are having to fork out for these rip off price differentials

Looks like i shall be buying my new camera gear in my December trip to the States

I agree as well -- even when you buy Books on which there is no tax of any kind you often see prices like US 15.00 (dollars) UK 13.99 (Pounds). Since the pound is a tad under 2 US dollars this is RIP OFF BIG TIME.

I buy books directly now from Amazon US and even with shipping / postage the price is STILL cheaper than the UK price.

I understand why prices are (or could be) a little higher in the UK -- Sales tax in the US varies but is never more than around 8% - correct me if I'm wrong someone from that side of the pond -- and US prices are shown NOT including TAX.

UK prices include the VAT which exaggerates the difference quite a lot.

Taking acount of higher sales volumes in the US and probably higher shipping and distribution costs to Europe I could justify say a 7% price difference but 20% --no way.

Remember however that the Street price in the UK will be less --after the initial flurry of "New adopters" people like Park Cameras I'm sure will hobble together a decebt deal.

I'm in Hong Kong over Easter --hopefully I can pick up one there.

Cheers

-K

Isn't just about everything more expensive in the UK? I think the price relative to everything else is about the same there as it is in the USA.

A German dealer ac-foto.com already shows the 1D3 as EUR 4.292 + 111 for UPS COD shipping to "England" (no UK listed as a country). This includes the German VAT (of 19%). With currency rate 1.49, this results in £2.955 at your door in UK.

Somebody needs to explain to me why a stable product market that doesn't change every six months is a bad thing. Most people complaining that "Canon didn't come out with a camera personalized for me" probably aren't going to buy a new camera anyway.
And the ones worried that Canon is going to go out of business every time some company comes out with a new entry-level DSLR aren't looking beyond their computer monitor. From the 5D up in the product line, Canon has no competition
The competition for any product is always at the entry level where the price is lowest and more people can afford to buy. It's why they sell more Chevys than Cadillacs. Good luck.

Not to rub salt in the wound, but here in the states if you buy something mail order and the company does not have a presence in your state you don't pay the sales tax. B&H is in new york and I live in new jersey (they are seperated by the hudson river), and I don't pay tax. That's why the prices are listed without tax; the tax is determined by state. Theoretically you are supposed to keep track of such purchases and pay an additional tax at the end of the year. The down side is that if I drive across the bridge and visit their store to pick out my lens I do have to pay the 8% NY sales tax.

If this is going to be the real price in EU and I think so (around the 4K but in €), I hope B&H is going to fill up their stocks with 1D MkIII´s at $4K, because 4$K -->>> €3.075, for this price I can fly to NYC, buy the cam, saty the week end in the city, come back and still I did not wast all the cost of the cam here !!!
