I'm not questioning whether you or any other FM member got a 1D III from the camera store - what I am questioning is either the competance or honesty of some of the Camera Store's sales staff. i find VERY frustrating about the camera store, that if you call in and ask to speak to a pro photo sales rep (when Peter is not available), the sales person says that he/she can help, however, they can never seem to give the correct answer on anything. I know that The Camera Store tends to get in stuff a lot faster then Vistek, but bcoz of past frustrations getting a salesperson available who actually can help you, i have preferred to get most of my gear at vistek, unless they dont' have something i need - plus they tend to have smaller waiting list.
I expereinced the same thing when i called in about the 16-35L II, someone on FM had indicated that they had picked up their lens from The Camera Store to find out how many they received, to get an idea on how back ordered they were and how many lenses canon was releasing so i can figure out when Vistek would get one (since Vistek usually gets their stock from their Toronto store, there is an extra shipping step involved, so i know it takes anyway from a few days to a week longer) Anyway, when i called about the lens, i had asked to speak to a sales person for Pro gear and was told by the salesperson who answered that they could help me. WHen i asked them how many lenses they received in their initial shipment i was told that they had not received anything from canon yet and weren't expecting any shipments for at least a couple more weeks. I called an hour later and someone else told me that they had received some lenses a few days back, but they were given to those who had pre-ordered the lens. I would expect that if someone doesn't know something, he/she would have the common courtesy to ask one of their co-workers rather then give a false or lazy answer.
Same thing when i went their inquiring about the Gitzo 3540LS tripod (after being told that Vistek didn't have it in stock and i needed one quickly for a trip). The salesperson at the Camera Store said that the he hadn't heard of the model and since it wasnt in the system,he doubted it would be released for at least 3 - 4 months.
Anyway, I called Vistek back to see how long it would take to get one and they called me back in and later and said that they could get one in a week.
I think some of the sales people i've dealt with at The Camera Store in the past are great (Julian, Peter, and a few others), but they have so many staff members that half of them don't seem to know what the hell is going on, yet they give dumb ass answers as if they know everything.
On the other hand, I found Conar who was the manager at Vistek, excellent to deal with (from what i heard, he is now the Canon rep in Calgary or the region), I got one of the first 1V HS when it came out from him and have dealt with him until he left. I find that the sales staff that I deal with now also very helpful and prompt in tending to my queries....Show more →
You shouldn't blame TCS... if you're a CPS member, you already know that Canon Canada is allotting the cameras, and the stores have little to say about who gets a camera or when they will get it.
Vistek Calgary has so few customers left that I'm surprised they were allotted any cameras. Since their store is usually empty, that's the place to go if you don't want to have to wait in line to talk to a sales person (although once you do get to talk to someone, you quickly realize why their store is always empty...)
