is there a more relevant topic of the day?

j/k ...

I dont think its actually that bad yet though (save for the should I upgrade one)
And I am sure the mods are aware of things... doubt you needed this thread to point out the blatantly obvious.

thanks for adding one more thread to the irrelevant pile though ...

There is nothing wrong with freedom of posting sixty 1D3 threads except the freedom of the other topic posters are not taken into consideration. The XT/x0D owners still want to talk about their gear and ask questions. People still want to ask about 24-70 vs. 24-105 and 85/1.8 vs 85/1.2 and whether their new lens back/front focus in darkness. Their threads shouldn't have to be on page 2 or 3 after 10 minutes.

their threads shouldnt be there at all given that those topics have come up hundreds of times and are in the archives.

If i had a dollar for every 85vs85 etc thread I think I could afford a new 1D3

hard to go to the archives for discussion of the 1D3!

I am not sure why you guys are so surprised. The Mk III is a pretty signficant product release affecting many the pro and semi-pro people on this forum.

Looks like we are averaging about 7 threads on page 1 now. I suppose I should delete this one to make room for one more

And so was the 1DMKII after the 1D and the 1DSMKII after the 1Ds and the 5D after the 20D and the D60 after the D30 and the 10D after the D60

The more things change the more they stay the same..

Or, we could all just ignore the 1st page of the forum for a few days, until all the excitement settles down.

Hey, I'm a 1-series guy, and I find it amazing that we have to have 7 threads devoted to this.

I woke up this morning to 5 threads on page 1...really, is that necessary?

Having all the info in one place would actually make it easier...seriously. I would like to read some of this stuff, not because I'm planning to upgrade (I just bought two 1DMarkIIN bodies back in Nov/Dec), but just to stay in the loop on the latest developments...however, I'm not going to keep switching between 7 threads looking for info. I downloaded the white paper PDF and have pretty much ignored everything else 'cause I don't have the time to sort through it all.

Please, Jeff, consolidate these threads, like we did with the pre-PMA stuff.

Thanks very much!

The multiple threads are handy. The main thread is already about 30 pages long and counting. Having additional threads to discuss separate issues makes it easier to get right to the topic you're interested in.

one mor ebump for this great thread

I can see the appeal of having 1 thread.... but its hard to keep up on such a beast with so many new posts. At least with 5 or more threads, you can pick one, and actually keep up with it.

As Jeff (mod) has mentioned before (and hopefully not paraphrasing too terribly) , he views these forums like a coffee shop where there are different conversations at each table. You sit down where you like and have a chat.

Well... its kinda hard to have a chat at a table with 1000 people (i.e. a consolidated thread). I find the separate makes it a bit more manageble.

And this 1D3 is arguably the most significant 'upgrade' (as far as new features etc are concerned), so its a bit different than talking about the 1D2N when it came out...

Relax. It's not as bad as I thought it would be...and I refrained from adding a new thread last night and this morning, but I'm not ususally a thread starter anyway. Let's hope it doesn't get out of hand. But there is a *lot* to chat about...

I can understand the merits of several threads if they were clearly about different aspects of the discussed item but that just never happens.

At least this thread has a specific theme and and will remain that way i.e. with a "hot topic", should there be one consolidated thread or as many as coffeeshoppers want to start?

Ariel and Jeremy are absolutely right.

Oh, and this thread should be in the Forum & Miscellaneous board.

true...

but keeping the analogy...

is it really a problem to have 5 tables, all with the same topic, if thats what people want to talk about?

Easier to have 5 tables with 5 people, each talking on the same thing, rather than 1 table of 25 trying to talk about the same topic...

If you wanted to ask the mod to clean up the Canon forum, why didn't you send a PM instead of adding another thread to the collection? I'm sure Jeff checks his PMs more regularly than he browses the first two or three pages of the forum.

No it shouldn't. Its about something specific to this board that is happening right now. And its about a Canon product.

... but we haven't even gotten to the threads about how bad this camera
is (DPR has already reached this Next Stage of Enlightenment), the poor
quality of the sample photos, the insignificant increase in MP, the silliness
of some of the new features, etc. And when THAT dies down, say in a
week or so, the next camera will be announced.... and by the time things
die down from that we start hearing from early users, all about the piss-poor
IQ at 6400, the backfocusing issues, the dead pixel in the lower-left hand
corner, the stupidity of the menus, etc. But considering some of the alternatives,
its nice to know that life as we know it goes on as we know it.

I'd much rather see a bundle of threads on the same camera than have to look through thousands of posts involving hundreds of topics in the one thread.

The other extreme is to have a single thread for each camera and for each lens. What the heck, how about one for each manufacturer. Yes I am being silly but that's what mega-threads are like for people who are interested but cannot afford the time and effort to wade through and organise all of the posts.

A compromise would be to start a new forum for the 1-series cameras or L-series lenses, but even then it would never work for everyone because there is a lot of legitimate cross-over between pro gear topics and the rest.

I feel sorry that OP thinks there is too many 1d3 threads. This is a board about canon gear, and 1d3 is a *major* release.

And I don't understand the reason why we only want one thread for 1d3. For the format of this board, that is few posts per page, isnt better that we discuss different thing on its own thread? like new AF module, micro AF, buffer, etc?

I am confused.
