p.1 #1 · IQ of a 5d vs. a 1ds?

I am struggling with the idea of selling my 1ds and buying a 5d. My question is will I be losing anything? I here so many who talk about how fantastic the 5d is but most of them are coming from a 10d or 20d. I am hoping to find some opinions from those who went the other way of leaving their 1ds and going with a 5d and why. I am talking about an original 1ds not a MarkII.

I realize that at high ISOs the 5d wins but how about everything else. AF, IQ at ISO 640 and below etc. I realize the biuld quality is less but I already have a 1dIIn that I could use if the conditions were harsh like a rain out wedding etc so that is not a critical issue for me. I guess I have heard enough people claim they were sorry when they gave up their 1ds for a 5d but they never really explain why. That is my question. What will i be losing from those who have done the switch if i lose anything and what will be gained. Once I hear this from those who lived it I will be better informed to make a decision. In practical application will I be sorry or is it worth it or will I gain so much I will be thrilled.

The big difference I realize is high ISO but is that worth the switch? I currently use a 1dIIn and love the 1 series bodies which may leave a taste of buyer's remorse but I am hoping to get anyone else's opinion who has made the switch both good and bad.

Thanks for the input.

No responses. I realize this topic has been beat to death but I thought there were a lot out there who went from the 1ds side to the 5d instead of just the 20d to 5d.

Any insight is appreciated.

You answered your own questions, there is really nothing left for anyone else to say.

I guess I don't understand. I how I answer whether anyone who has made this switch felt it was worth it or did they have any regrets or missed features?

It's funny, I remember the 1Ds fondly and sometimes get to thinking that I liked it better at ISO 100 than I like the 5D.

Recently, though, I shot some baby pictures for a client and with a fairly dark background. I used my 5D. About two years ago I shot some pictures of their previous son with the same dark backdrop. They asked me to to do a few prints of their older son along with the new prints. This was the first time I'd looked at a 1Ds file in a while. I was amazed how much color noise the 1Ds file had in a the dark backdrop, even at ISO 100. Way more than I would consider acceptable now that I'm used to the 5D. It brought back memories of working long hours in photoshop trying to get rid of such things. The 5D file is much cleaner, and really doesn't give up anything in detail.

Personally I like the smaller body and find the AF just as good, but YMMV.

Tony,
Thanks for the input. This is the type of info i was looking for. real world application differences. I never took a long look at files from boththe 1ds and the 1dIIn shot at the same subjects. i will need to try it out to see if I can see the same results when comparing those two bodies.

I am hesitant because I am afraid I might regret the switch or lose something in the swap.

The 5D IQ is superior to the 1Ds IQ - period!
