p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · County Championships- HS Gymnastics

I had to cover a gymnast from Suffolk County for a Long Island Magazine on Friday. Brittany Cassar took second place in the overall and is headed to states.

Prior to the meet, I photographed Brittany during training at her home gym on Thursday. The lighting, as usual, was horrible. ISO 3200, f/1.8, 1/100. But, I was allowed to use flash during practice

Now, to the actual meet. Lighting wasn't much better. You have to get at least 1/500 with the level 10 gymnasts. I had to use my entire arsenal of low light lenses to get anything near 1/500... 200/1.8, 85/1.8, 135/2. I was tempted to use the 85/1.2, but the focusing is just not fast enough. Even at ISO 1600, the shots were underexposed and needed some PP.

Starting with bars...

10) Not the best form on this, but I thought the composition was interesting...

With vault, it's hard to get flattering shots from where I was standing, so I went with a different approach...

Last one... on floor. This is at ISO 3200. I have been practicing some PP techniques at ISO 3200. How does this one look?

Paul... they look very nice, even at ISO 3200. I'd be interested in your PP steps/settings for 3200 shots. Indoors, it's a reality, and I'd like some tips going into basketball season.

I like the vault shots... emphasizes her determination. I've never shot gymnastics, but assume you can't ever use flash for competition.

Paul,
Very nice shots !!! I particularly like your "approach to the Vault" shots. Would you care to elaborate about your technique? I have a grandson and granddaughter both doing level 9 competitive gymnastics and competition season is just around the corner.

Great collection Paul. 6 looks great in b&w. She's got some great facial expression throughout. 12 works better for me than 11 because of both the composition and the fact that you can make out her arms. Great job dealing with challenging lighting!

Paul,
As usual, these look great. I am really struggling to get any decent color back into in my 3200 shots. It is inspiring to see that6 it can be done. So, how are getting this level of color? Is it all PP, or are you also changing your camera settings?

Thanks,
Travis

Paul,
Great work under the most brutal of conditions. Like the others i'm intrested in you workflow for noise and color.

Hey Paul:

Nice stuff as always. Your timing, composition and ability to capture the emotion of the athlete is, as always, top notch.

I prefer the look and color of the competition shots, even without the flash. 4, 6 and 12 are my favorites.

Your PP on the last shot is great. I can see a little noise in her skin, more prominent in areas where she shows more muscularity like her calves but not objectional at all. Which lens where you using for the last shot and I'd be curious to know if it's cropped very much.

Perfect. That's what I was trying to do. NN some parts and not others.

PP for the last shot is this:

1) On an adjustment layer, increase sliders for yellow and red to bring back the skintones usually lost at high ISO.

2) Downsize using Max's web action which includes sharpening.

3) A double pass of NN. First pass includes brushing the noise back in certain parts of the photo. Which includes details in the face and leo, and details that accentuate the muscularity. Plus, the brush is going to brush in the edges between subject and background. Then, in the second pass, brush back in everything except BG.

Ron...this was with the 200/1.8 with little cropping.

Sounds good. The 200 1.8 with little cropping is certainly going to give you the most to work with in post; unless maybe the 1DSMark2. Maybe Santa will put one under your tree this year

Ron... unless YOU ARE Santa, I seriously doubt it.

Paul...I like the B&W treatment on #5. Looks like #8 was your best exposure of the lot. Really like what you've captured in #12, and the pose in #13. Most of these shots seem to have an orange/yellow cast, which may be related to your mention in another thread of warming the skintones at ISO 3200?

No, they are just victims of cycling lights and underexposure....
