p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Aussie V8 Supercars

Hi folks,

Just a few pics from my first real outing with the Sigma 120-300 F/2.8

The bulk of the images are from the 'Oran Park' round of the V8 supercars series.

The lens performed great, producing some extra sharp images, in fact it performed better than I though it would. I let it down by poor lens handling and poor technique. I need to learn how to pan using a monopod, so any hints will be accepted!!!

Heres my pics:

The Commodores of Skaife and Richards duelling for position.

The Valvoline Racing Team.

The Commodore of Richards goes off-road.

The Ford Falcon of Craig Lowndes in the late afternoon sun.

Comments and criticism welcome!

(and hints for monopod panning also!!!!)

Alan , nice shots .
I was hoping to see one of Murphy , but i know it is easier to get the cars at the front of the race.
My tip on monopod panning is dump the pod , those guys do about 30 laps per race so have a break between the cars you want to shot . And try next lap or next car.

I gather this isn't a criticism

Allan, I'm thinking that might be a idea. The next race I'm attending is the Mt. Panorama 1000 at Bathurst, so with 4 days of racing I should either A) get my technique down pat, or B) be utterly knackered by the end of it with no real improvement.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm assuming Adam is referring to shots 2 and 3. You can see the huge amount of negative camber the car has in those photos. Anyway, that's what I thought when I read his comment.

In #1, are they coming downhill into the corner? It appears the corner is flat so that's what it seems like to me.

Nice sharp images and great colors.

Precisely. I guess I forgot that this isn't an automotive forum.

Hunter ,

The cars are track only , the cars are either a ford / holden(GM) V8 powered and have limits on what they can do to them , they have speed limitors and other things for saftey.
The curcuits they race on are quite tight and passing is limited to corners( except Bathurst) so thats why they are on the dirt as well as the track .

They only go off track by accident!

The cars are supposedly 'what average people can buy'. That being said, the only thing that is the same as what the average punter can buy is the shape of the body. There are only two manufacturers, Holden (General Motors basically) and Ford. It makes for close racing, with the country split 50/50 in who to support.

The website of the series is here.

It's a great series, some of the drivers are international drivers, but mainly they are fromNew Zealand or Australia. We sometimes export drivers to you guys, Marcus Ambrose is driving those Nascar Truck things you have over there.

Thanks for the comments folks. The Sigma is great (I never thought I's say that....)

They often do, but they're not meant to! It's kind of like Touring Cars, i.e. traditional track racing.
