Sony as a brand name will appeal to the uneducated masses of newbie DSLR users - everyone and their grandma will have one before long, sticking themselves in the bl**dy way at weddings, and proclaiming to be professionals and so on.
Sony is what people know - your uncle Trevor who wants a camera will think "Ooh Sony are famous so it must be good" "My CD player is a Sony therefore...." and so on. They will shift millions.
I feel it will always be at the lower end of the market though - real photographers know the merits of Canon and Nikon etc, and Sony are just sticking their oar in to grab some of the market. It will be a very very long time till all the cameras at the side of a football pitch are Sony instead of Canon - hopefully never...
Their financial strength is one thing, but look at Toyota in Formula One - biggest budget, and no success at all in years of trying - you can't buy success....Show more →
I love how the subjective our world is. Canonland is king for almost every home consumer I've talked with. I constantly have people come up to me and ask about my gear at weddings and commercial/advertising shoots. When I say Canon, they nod and verbally say they're thoughts on camera brand were reaffirmed after speaking with me. If a pro's using it, it's got to be the best (from their POV). Although, ask any of those people if they know what a hasselblad h2d is.

What is a Hasselblad H2D? And if I have to ask, does it mean I can't afford one?
Not to do with anything but does anyone know anything about the Pentax 645D that's supposed to be out soon? (Oh, maybe I'll just leave this Canon rumor stuff behind and check the Alternative Digital forum. Those guys must know what's up.)
1. 16mp, 24x36mm, 8fps, $4500 (maybe up to $5000 initially)
2. 22mp, 24x36mm, 4fps, $8000 (maybe up to $10000 initially)
I don't think they will waver far from those price points. They've already said that their plan is to make all the pro cameras 24x36mm, and all it should take is DIGIC III (already announced) to push even the current 1Ds sensor to 8fps.
Sounds reasonable, but what is Canon's impetus to ditch 1.3 crop anyway? If option 1 shared a sensor with another camera, it would make sense - but the 30D/5D series runs on a completely different sub-system voltage wise, so I would question whether they're really "compatible" with each other.
If Canon legitimately cares about the Pro market, I think they'd see that not everyone is pining for a FF camera, regardless of FPS or even file size.
Doesnt Sony manufacture Nikons Digial sensors already? Not saying they make them completely, im sure Nikon uses them for the manufacture side alone, but would that lead one to believe that Sony and Nikon may "join forces" so to speak? In a way, a Sony DSLR my end up being a 're-badged' Nikon...
Unless im totally missing it, just a thought/theory.
Either way, Im personally really looking forward to the possible price 'wars' that can only benefit us

as far as i know, Nikon and Fuji are talking, so maybe we will see some SuperCCD's in the next wave of Nikon cameras ..

I just wanted to add a small note to this. I remember a Canon rep telling me that all the P&S Canon's have a Sony CCD in them. For what it's worth.
Imagine Sony, Canon and Nikon merge and then buyout Sigma...No choice at all - maybe this is all a conspiracy anyway - maybe these cameras cost $4 to make and we are all suckers.
Sony make bits - bits to go in other people's things - that's what they are good at - it's when they design stuff from scratch it all goes wrong.
The best rumor-to-true would be a 40MP 35mm sized sensor with all the features of the 1Ds MkII (plus IS on sensor itself) and weighing in only at 650g. The best price should be $500.00. Such a body will be called "The People's body" for almost everyone can afford to own it. Too good to true? Nay, it's possible just as it's possible for to have free oil for everyone ... only if we can change our mindset and embark upon a revolutionary economic thinking.

Not sure how good Sony is at making bits. The laptop batteries that are being recalled were all made by Sony.

Hmmmm. Well, I'd go with the 16MP camera at 8 FPS, but a $10k camera? That's too much and even Canon has to recognize that.
A top of the line camera was 20% of that amount a few years ago (my 1VHS) and even if I can write it off, paying $10k for a camera that's only good for 2 years before the competition moves on is asking a lot. Last I knew, the IRS still had depreciation schedules that must be followed.
I'd do the same, but disagree that there isn't a market for the $10K version. The 22 mp camera would really start to take share from MF backs. Much better ISO range/noise performance, smaller & better handling, greater lens selection including TS models & zooms, better frame rate, and all for a fraction of MF back prices.
Yes, still a #2 re: file size, but I don't know too many guys complaining about their 1Ds II not giving them adequete res.
Digital FD. Well, kinda. A buddy of mine who works for Canon Israel told me that the new gear is the LAST in the EOS line, and theyr'e going to announce EFD next week.

Fair point - ok they are crap at everything...
All this Sony stuff is only going to appeal to amateurs - Canon have drawn a line in the sand, making the xxxD range to compete and the Xd range for pros and semi-pros. As long as the two ranges stay apart I have no problem.
I have the impression a lot of people forgot what happened two year sago, just before Photokina.
Canon announced the 20D in August, and the 1DsmkII (first digic II) only end of september, just before Photokina .
