This of course was the info from the mysterious missing post which led to a long thread a day or so ago. Perhaps I'm naive but this still looks very realistic (perhaps a bit too optimistic). These are not exactly main stream lenses.

There is nothing 'mysterious' about the missing post (the OP deleted it), and regardless of how 'realistic' the information may look, the information above is not considered to be from any official source, whatsoever.

Sorry ......... didn't mean to stir anything up by using the word 'mysterious'. I know he deleted the post... perhaps he added credibility by deleting the post but probably just my imagination running away with me..... I am going to back out of any discussion about this.... it's all getting rather silly and I should have know better than to post anything in regards to it. See you all in a week or so and we can discuss the facts instead.

So far I only see one hint of 100/2.8 IS Macro in EOS20's post, and seems no one is excited about it Now, Nikon has a 105 Micro VR, I wish Canon will offer something comparable, and it'd better be an "L"

Just try me.... :-)

Give me an EF 50/2 1:1 macro with ring USM and IF and I'll gladly sell my 100/2.8 macro USM for it.

Another thing altogether is whether such a lens is in the works. My guess is that it doesn't but I wouldn't bet against a 50/2.8 version.

Its just that minimal depth-of-field is less important in a macro lens where its already abundant in spades and the wide aperture would make it considerably more difficult to design and maintain all the elements that go into making macro lenses what they are; ie. super-sharp and distortion free.
The cost of making a technically excellent 50/2.0 would negatively impact the financial viability of what is, after all, the least popular macro length.

I hope the EF-S range is expanded to cement its position in the range if nothing else. I think the 1Ds2n will be a 1Ds3 and while keeping the same sensor, will have an enhanced spec all round and yet a much lower price. Canon MUST bite the bullet if we are to accept they genuinely believe FF is the future. If its expensive then it remains obvious that to Canon, FF remains a low volume, high profit niche format.

these are almost contradictory, yes? the more canon puts into the ef-s line, the greater commitment they have to providing an upgrade path within the prosumer line. and FF will never be cost competitive with 1.6 cropped sensors, if only because of the cost of fabbing them (the lower yield).

My point is that Canon are pushing FF as the new mainstream yet price it with a ludicrous premium so how is it ever going mainstream?
Because of this focus on FF, they seem unwilling to develop the APSC format upwards and thats always been my beef. I'd just like to see Canon acknowledge the crop sensor as a legitimate and equal format and stop messing around worrying about stepping on the 5D's toes. As I've said before, if a new crop 3D at a similar price to the 5D kills 5D sales then maybe FF isn't the big feature that Canon thinks the market wants. If it doesn't then fine but don't alienate the vast majority of your users because they don't agree with the direction you want to go.

Relax, the EOS 350D is not going to be discontinued - it is doing a great job against the entry-level DSLRs from Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and Samsung. The new model is more likely to go head-to-head with the Sony Alpha A100 and Nikon D80.

my rumor:
1dsmkIII - merged 1d/1ds
22 mp
digic III = better color , slightly less noise
reduced resolution mode or crop mode to get 8 or 10 fps
new flash exposure system, another method used than preflash

From an insider:

Rebel XTi available this fall. Should have the auto cleaner like the new Sony.

He's been right about everything else (5D and 30D) so far, so I'd take this as gospel. He's tight lipped about everything else.

If this it true, I will probably buy it and dump the 20D as my travel camera. Man, I hate changing lenses when out and about. It's not whether dust will get in or not, it's when will it get in?

A self cleaning sensor may not be perfect and auto clean 'everything', but even some is better than nothing! I would probably shoot more primes too.

I read the occasional rumor about a cheap 3000d in addition to a 400d, but I wonder about the strategy behind that. I think having the low-end is a good idea, but not having it on the same update cycle as the 400d. If they come out with both now, and they continue the 18-month cycle, they have nothing to market as NEW! for Christmas 2007. So I am wondering/thinking that they might release one now (probably the 400d, which is due) and do the other next spring or later.

I WANT the 30D, but I can settle for a 3000d if it means I can get the 10-22! But if a 3000d comes out without RAW, as some rumors have said, then forget it.

Best prediction ...
... back engineered UFO technology from Area 51 will make IS obsolete. The cameras will just “hover” above the ground when we let them go, thus eliminating the need for tripods at the same time.

Did you hear about the Canon R2D2. Its a 1000000MP camera that will walk to the shooting location and take photos without, while you sleep in.

Here we are, just weeks to Photokina and no bona fide leaks evident yet.
Yeah, other than that apparent faux pas of a self-deleted post....35 f/1.8, 100-400 (upgraded IS) and 400 f/5.6 IS, not sure about that one....it may also be a prank of sorts.

Curse upon you Canon if you waste your engineering resource on those lenses as opposed to the ones in my (long) "awaiting" list (see signature) !

remember "New FD/FDn?"

you heard it here first:

New EF! (EFN)
the birth of a new legend... it will be kinda the opposite of how FD went- EFN will be a new breech-mount system.

My rumors (well at least the one I find credible):

I think we will see a merged 1Ds/1D body with full-frame and two resolution modes, but I also think we will see the next full-frame 1Ds as well. Merging the lines will unify full-frame as an enduring format and 1.3x will be dropped, but we will see the evolution of the 1Ds Mk II into the next level 1Ds Mk III without the design compromises of dual mode.

So here are my predictions:

1Ds Mk II replaced with 1Ds MkIII with 22mp, Digic III and 5 fps
1D Mk IIn replaced with full-frame 18mp @5 fps, Digic III and 12 mp FF mode @ 8 fps
30D replaced with 40D 12mp 1.6x crop body
350D XT replaced with entry-level 370D 10mp 1.6x crop DSLR body

new 400mm f5.6 IS
new 50mm f1.4L

I'm sure most will disagree.

Rumor has it that those who actually have real insider info don't share any details; inversely, those who share details....

Anyway... people might be more surprised by what isn't at Photokina than by what is.

Hey, Mike, nice one! A proper contribution at this point distances yourself a bit from the mere wishful thinkers, etc -- then adds something with an air of mystery, some content, but not quite enough to be embarrassingly falsifiable. (And this one will look good if the 1 series unification doesn't show up at PK, which is very possible -- in fact what people were predicting until gear-fever really set in.)

Your source seems to have some credibility. A simple Google search turned this up. This is no coincidence.

This same book is listed at several other bookstores, most notably Amazon. Sadly, no details other than the name itself!

The distributor who will host the Canon announucement in China on 8/24 confirms there will be only one new DSLR from Canon this time, but they don't know what it is (even they do, they aren't allowed to disclose). And since many dealers have got a hint to sell off 350D they have, it looks most likely a 350D upgrade, i.e., Rebel XTi or 370D discussed in this thread.
Now I'm more interested in what new glasses will be out.

Taking a page from all the great tabloid prognosticators (Jean Dixon is our hero), let me remind you that in 1999 I predicted that Canon would introduce the D30, and I accurately stated it's major specs. Right now, I can assure you that the stars make it very clear that Canon will introduce three new cameras and three new lenses in the coming year, to great acclaim.
Yes, 2005 will be an exciting time for photographers!
