>> the 50/2.0 macro will never sell.

Just try me.... :-)

Give me an EF 50/2 1:1 macro with ring USM and IF and I'll gladly sell my 100/2.8 macro USM for it.

Another thing altogether is whether such a lens is in the works. My guess is that it doesn't but I wouldn't bet against a 50/2.8 version.

Why not? The current 50mm macro is still popular and is a fantastic lens! Its long over due for a upgrade though, Making it half a stop faster, adding a USM and making it 1:1 instead of 1:2 would make it a very popular lens for those shooting Full frame or APS-H cameras and find the 100mm macro to long.

It would also make a great "Normal" lens on a full framed camera and a nice low light lens!

Sprout Crumble wrote:
all the above and more is already true of the ef-s 60mm macro that was just recently released. great lens. certainly lessens the liklihood that we'd see any significant 50mm macro changes.

Except the EF-S 60mm macro doesn't fit a full frame camera...so how can you say 'all the above and more' when EOS20 said 'on a full framed camera'

Canon 24-125mm f/2.8 L IS
Canon 15-40mm f/2.8 L
Canon 50-200mm f/2.8 IS L

I've never heard of these lenses...where did you get them?

Great -- well let me be the first to carry over the fun (and I think plausible) rumor set that has been much discussed in one of those threads:

1] a merged 1D, 18.5 mp, 5 fps - 10 mp 8.5 fps digic 3. looks like current 1D
2] a 5D update or camera looking like a 5D, 6 fps, improved autofocus, digic 3. same sensor as 5D.
3] 100-400 4L - improved IS
4] 35 1.8
5] 400 5.6 IS

This of course was the info from the mysterious missing post which led to a long thread a day or so ago. Perhaps I'm naive but this still looks very realistic (perhaps a bit too optimistic). These are not exactly main stream lenses.

Some camera with a pellicle mirror also seems to keep cropping up - hate to think how you would clean the sensor.

With improving high ISO, pellicle mirros look more and more attractive. With a pellicle mirror, would it not be possible to seal the entire space behind and below the mirror, so that cleaning the sensor would be a thing of the past?

There is nothing 'mysterious' about the missing post (the OP deleted it), and regardless of how 'realistic' the information may look, the information above is not considered to be from any official source, whatsoever.

Thanks...didn't notice the Mk III on the bodies.

But didn't the 50mm f/1.0 exist? Although, I believe it was an L lens.

Sorry, I just don't get all this rumor and joking about what Canon might have in a few weeks/months. I guess I need to switch gears and not click on the [Next] thread, only to find out it's a bunch of speculation nonsense. Or, perhaps, just stay clear of the Canon SLR forum for a while.

Just steer clear of this thread, and all will be good in the world. That was one of the points of consolidating all of the rumors into one thread, so that people like you can easily avoid the constant 'noise' if you wish.

PS: And yes, the 50/1.0 was indeed an "L" lens.

The best way to start a powerful rumor seems to post it in a new thread and then delete that thread shortly afterwards

so... i should sell all my gear right? what is the new legendary item that is coming

EF-X lenses... X standing for "way too eXpensive for you peons"

maybe a 7D with 7fps and 12mp

but seriously, I would love to see a 100-400/4 IS, although I probably couldn't afford it, it would be sweet.

what I'm really looknig forward to (as usual) are the price drops on the older gear as a result of the new announcements... always a step behind

Sorry ......... didn't mean to stir anything up by using the word 'mysterious'. I know he deleted the post... perhaps he added credibility by deleting the post but probably just my imagination running away with me..... I am going to back out of any discussion about this.... it's all getting rather silly and I should have know better than to post anything in regards to it. See you all in a week or so and we can discuss the facts instead.

So far I only see one hint of 100/2.8 IS Macro in EOS20's post, and seems no one is excited about it Now, Nikon has a 105 Micro VR, I wish Canon will offer something comparable, and it'd better be an "L"

Its just that minimal depth-of-field is less important in a macro lens where its already abundant in spades and the wide aperture would make it considerably more difficult to design and maintain all the elements that go into making macro lenses what they are; ie. super-sharp and distortion free.
The cost of making a technically excellent 50/2.0 would negatively impact the financial viability of what is, after all, the least popular macro length.

these are almost contradictory, yes? the more canon puts into the ef-s line, the greater commitment they have to providing an upgrade path within the prosumer line. and FF will never be cost competitive with 1.6 cropped sensors, if only because of the cost of fabbing them (the lower yield).

My point is that Canon are pushing FF as the new mainstream yet price it with a ludicrous premium so how is it ever going mainstream?
Because of this focus on FF, they seem unwilling to develop the APSC format upwards and thats always been my beef. I'd just like to see Canon acknowledge the crop sensor as a legitimate and equal format and stop messing around worrying about stepping on the 5D's toes. As I've said before, if a new crop 3D at a similar price to the 5D kills 5D sales then maybe FF isn't the big feature that Canon thinks the market wants. If it doesn't then fine but don't alienate the vast majority of your users because they don't agree with the direction you want to go.
