p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · # 202 The Griffith Observatory

This is the Observatory in Griffith Park in Los Angeles. It was made famous throughout the world when it appeared as the setting for the climactic scene in the James Dean movie "Rebel Without A Cause". It was closed in May of 2002 for a 90 million dollar renovation project. It's due to be reopened late this year. Since it was opened in 1935 over 70 million people have visited it. This is the website for detailed information about it.
http://www.griffithobs.org/ We can see it from our upstairs windows although I had a hard time getting up close enough to take this shot. I drove up as close as I could but all the good views were hidden in people's backyards. Serendipitously, a family arrived home just as I was trying to figure out how to get the shot and they graciously let me (a complete stranger) come into their backyard to shoot this. (Many thanks to new friends Sarkis and Adrienne for helping me out! )

Fantastic exposure Endre! You also did an excellent job with the composition, even though you seemed to be a bit limited in your options.

Absolutely beautiful shot, Endre. It's almost as if the clouds are breaking apart so one can observe the heavens.

Thanks so much, Ed. I had only one position I could shoot from - right between the house and the guest house - so I'm lucky it came out so nicely.
All the best,
Endre

Thanks, Peter, my friend. i appreciate your kind words but I see no reason for you to quit. I'm sure that there is something in your neck of the woods that counts as a local landmark that you will undoubtedly make a magnificent photo of. I look forward to it.
Best wishes,
Endre

No reason for you to quit either, Hopper. I've been up to Eugene. There's lots of landmarks up there. Obviously you've been to the Observatory here. the Lazerium shows were pretty spectacular. From what I read, the newly installed planetarium was specifically customized for the Observatory and will be by far the finest in the world. I can't wait!
Best,
Endre

Thank you so much Peter! Yes, serendipity often plays a role in photography, does it not?

Okay, I won't say "I quit", but I don't think I'll find anything here to compete with this! I visited the Griffith Observatory about 15 years ago, and am glad to hear that the renovation is nearly done.

Congrats on another great job; you deserve the serendipity!

Thanks, Jess, my friend. I'm delighted that you like it. I don't think Fred is looking for the most famous place but the best photo of a landmark. Knowing your skill, I'm certain that an amazing photo will find its way here yet. The Observatory is going to be an amazing place when it is all done. I wen there all the time when i was a kid and now we live within hiking distance of it. It was starting to get pretty ratty looking inside so the renovation was long overdue. I'm a member of the "Friends Of The Observatory" and there has been some talk of getting me to perform at the grand reopening. That would be way too cool.
Thanks again.
All the best,
Endre

Endre,

Serendipity? Luck? Timing? You have proven the adage that the harder one works, the luckier he or she becomes. Great shot!

Absolutely great exposure. Looking at the clouds you must have timed it perfectly not to get the harsh shadows as it seems perfectly dimmed by the light clouds. Beautiful picture. I appreciate the attachment to this landmark too.
