In a way, it would be nice to see the market level out as far as new upgrades. We're at a point where I would rather see more attention to better glass to accommodate the higher demands of higher resolution bodies.
Certainly. And the 30D does gives the impression that Canon has way leveled out at this price point. Let's hope they don't do this again (incremental release) becasue surely pouring their energy into incremental releases takes resources away from other pursuits, such as new lenses.
The 20D (and 30D) have the highest pixel density of any Canon DSLR. Cramming in more megapixels would make the noise worse. This may be one of the reasons Canon didn't go up to 10MP with this release.
Or maybe they wanted to keep using the same sensors as the 20D to save money?

Looks like it. But a lot of people only look at pixelcounts and might be going for the 200D now
Come one guys. Don't bash the 30D yet as I know most of you will upgrade in about 2 months and start new threads about how the 30D is better than the 20D. A large amount of people will find the 30D to be a very nice camera.
Upgrade if you are using the 300D/10D or don't if you already have the 20D. As for me...time to take out the credit card.
Canon have done really well to tempt me with this new 30D. It adresses exactly the (minor) issues I'm having with the 20D:
- spot metering
- RGB histogram
- better joystick for AF point selection
- ISO in 1/3 steps
- ISO in viewfinder

I really don't see why everybody is so bummed about the 30D. It fixes every problem everybody ever had with the 20D. ISO in the VF, 1/3 ISO stops, deeper buffer, etc. I bet the focusing has improved to, just like the 1D2 vs the 1D2n.
They made bunch of nice minor improvements, but I'll be waiting, if 30D's successor would finally have some solution for dust on sensor ...
Sigma and Olympus already have their solutions for the problem and there is at least one interview, where someone from Canon said that they had already considered it for 20D, but it would have been too expensive.

All the 20D has are minor faults.
I recall threads of people complaining saying "If only the 20D has this, this, this and this it would be the perfect camera". The 30D now has all of those features and people still want more (I know it's human nature, but still...). The 20D was near perfect for it's price and now the 30D IS perfect for it's price.
I just see this as the 1D2 vs 1D2n all over again. Everybody said the N was stupid and pointless, they would buy a 1D2 for cheaper and ingore the N. Then they actually USED the N and realized how those tiny improvements just made handing and SHOOTING with the camera much better and ended up getting the N.
Is the 30D worth upgrading from the 20D? Hardly, when I upgrade, it's straight to a 1series. But for people that have a 300D/10D or are just now jumping into DSLR's, I can not think of a more perfect camera for it's price.

Making the 30D 10MP was probably a major marketing dilemna for Canon. 10MP @ 1.6x crop for $1499 vs 11 MP @ FF for $2899 (using the typical discount price). I don't think Canon would have sold as many 5D's with a 10MP 1.6x body in the ranks.
With Canon's "N" update to the 1D2 and now a similar approach to the 20D/30D - I'm beginning to think the 1Ds2's big update is going be some "N" window dressing, and that's about it. If that's case, fine by me. Saves me money! I'd like to see new or more updated primes like the 85L II shown in the 30D picture.
Canon's bodies of recent times (1D IIn, 5D, 30D) have been evolutionary in nature. Yes, the 5D gets the new chip, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that it shares some manufacturing traits with the 1D II's chip. The 30D is an evolved 20D, just as the 10D was an evolved D60.
This tells me that Canon is working hard on the next revolutionary change in sensor technology. Maybe.....
Maybe a little letdown since Nikon D200 has more megapixels.
BUT! Do we really need more megapixels? I still have the 6Mp 300D and prints look good even at 10x15 inces.... Maybe we just have to get more realistic, if we need to print larger than 10x15 we need a professional body, not a $1300 consumer one!
it seems like on the used market a nice 20D is going for about 900-1000, so this should push that down a little... or maybe it's worth just buying a 30D.
