I planned on selling this lens after getting my 35L but just couldn't bring myself into doing it, and I'm glad that I didn't.

I quite enjoy these threads. Yes, they often repeat.

However, there are new people to this forum everyday that have not seen this. Plus, there are some people now looking for this lens who couldn't afford it before or weren't interested.

If we restricted these posts to truly original content, this would be a very small forum. So I say post away, even show me why your 35-80mm IV is a great lens, I welcome it.

Calm down- a lot of people make lens purchasing decision based upon review like this by people they know and trust.

I know my 10-22 post convinced a buyer or two, and Tom Hick's posts about the 180L convinced me to buy that lens! While uz2work's posts led me to buy a 100-400, so I think these are actually very valuable.

With that said, the 17-40 is a great little lens, that I regret selling, and will buy again soon- and people may want to know that

I've been hanging around here for over three years, and always enjoy seeing what people use their equipment for, and what they think some of their best examples from their favorite lenses are.

Blowout has been here less than three weeks, and already is annoyed...

Just buy the pics - it might wind up being less expensive than the lenses.

I had it but sold it after 2 rolls. It's very soft as many users have complaint. The color is not as vivid as my 28-70/2.8L either. A medicore wide angle with a L label.
Very disapointed!

I bought my 17-40 about 6 months ago and have been debating every since whether I like it or not. Until yesterday. I was looking at some pictures of a wedding a did a few weeks and looked at one really sharp picture and thought to myself, wow my 50mm is sharp. I opened up the exif info and it turns out it was shot with my 17-40. I was very impressed. The performance on a full frame is really disspointing though. On my Elan 7ne the corner and edge sharpness is terrible, and I imagine it would be rather dissapointing on a 5D as well.

I don't post much, or read as much as some others here, but I have been looking at the 17-40 and did want to know that!

You do all realize that if you want to see a bunch of photos of a given lens that Pbase allows you to browse galleries based just one what lens is used.

They probably have 50,000 images from the 17-40 alone

In fairness, looking at your sig, you're used to shooting w/ Zeiss primes. We're very happy with our Honda Civics, but yes your Mercedes is in a whole different class!

The 28-70 is a great lense too, and by all accounts much sharper. But its also twice as expensive and twice as heavy.

Please don't get me wrong. The 17-40/4L is still a good performer given the fact that it's a wide angle. And there's no other choice from Canon except for those expense primes - 24/1.4L, and 35/1.4L. I never used it with a DSLR so my experience with EOS 3 could be quite different since it's full frame.

Enjoy!

I haven't used my 17-40 since I got my 24-105. Using FF. Still, I just can't part with it.

I've heard many comments how inferior it is against CZ. The only comparison I have with Zeiss is a 28mm 2.8 I had. Eventhough it was a hair better than my 17-40, there just wasn't enough difference to justify not having the functionallity of the L lens. And..it was just so close. Maybe I've got a really good 17-40. Don't know...Anyway the true test will come shortly as we are remodeling the kitchen and I could be one appliance away of having to sell something. Hmmmm do we really need a whole new oven?

Wow...

This is a thread I thought I would never see. A 17-40 get rave reviews.

Heres my take........
The lens is soft. Very soft. It doesnt have a lot of contrast or saturation.
Its my LAST choice for lenses. I would rather use an old mexican coca-cola bottle thats been floting in the ocaen for 4 years. But I guess not everyone has 30k for lenses like I do so I will cut some slack on this thread.

I only use my 17-40 for night star trails. Try a 35L and compare the 2 lenses. I know its not as wide but just compare the image that comes out of both to understand what Im talking about.

If you have so much money for lens, why don't you purchase your favorite lens for all who have posted.
