p.1 #1 · uncertainty in buying

You know, for those of us who are finally able to buy a more expensive camera, and who have respect for both Nikon and Canon, the buying game has become a confusing ordeal.

Nikon has been taking a beating on almost every photographic related forum I have read in the recent past few weeks for D200 banding issues. Still, the photos posted from non-defective cameras are just stunning...

Canon is debuting their 20d replacement shortly, and to be completely blunt, I am completely confused as my loyalty is simply to the better machine and glass.

Glass from Canon is amazing. Glass from Nikon is amazing. As I understand it, Nikon of today is for artists, while Canon is more about the science... however, to buy a fairly versatile lens (the 28mm-300mm "L" Lens with IS) will cost $2k+USD and the Nikon solution to versatility (17mm-200mm with VR) is $750USD... Both, I am certain would render some amazing shots, but what a hefty price to pay on the Canon side...

I began shooting with an older Nikon setup I inherited from my dad when I was 10. In the Digital world, I've shot with a 10d, a D-70, a Rebel XT, and an Oly C-8080.

I would like to ask, with all due respect, which setup really is better in different situations. Canon and Nikon have always had some fierce rivalries going. The reality of expense vs. value has me wondering where the digital photography world is headed; 2+ years ago when the 300d was introduced with a ridiculously cheap build quality, but undeniably capable and beautiful competence as a photographic tool... Now, the D200 comes out and the build quality issues of a less expensive alternative have been addressed except for when it's taking pictures? Frankly, Quality is not something I am monetarily able to compromise on, and I don't know what to do.

Any help anyone can offer would be most appreciated.

As a very new Nikon D200 owner and former Canon 20D owner, I can say the interface to me is much easier and far more intuitive...at least to me...The system just makes more sense..It's not fair to compare the two cameras as the Nikon is more expensive..

The Canon is a fantastic camera..no complaints with picture quality and I loved the lenses I owned...

But this 18-200 Nikon is just so perfect for me..I can't stop playing around with it...I used to have a nice L glass collection and used the 28-135 most often...This new one is just perfect for most of my usage.

Some people don't have the problems using the Canon that I did...You should compare them for yourself...It's like Mac's and PC's...

Look at the photos you take. Be honest to yourself. Will a new camera make you take better shots? Did you feel limited by what you already have, and missed shots or couldnīt get your vision realized? Yes- get new gear. No- relax and enjoy the fuzzing of others about their gear. I like gear. The hardest part is not to choose a brand, -itīs to the decide between do I need it or do I want it? What made me change from Canon to Nikon was neither lens nor body- simply the arrogant und uncapable Canon service center in my place. Throw a dice for brand- get one, and then explore, dream, discover. Ignore any gear related forum. Be happy. Take pictures.

Well sad.

Personally I think in the advanced amateur price range (body and lenses from $1 - $3,000) Nikon gear is more affordable. You've already mentioned the midrange Canon IS lens. Nikon primes are more affordable and Nikon accessories seem to be slightly more affordable too, minus their overpriced 12-24mm.

But really you can't go wrong with either platform. The reason I went Nikon was that back then in the entry level DSLR market, the D70 was better than the Digital Rebel. Also my dad shot Nikon so there's some association there.

The d200 banding issue is overhyped. It's simply not an issue to the majority of d200 owners. Those that have defective cameras, are getting them fixed. The key word is defective, meaning that it isn't performing as normal.

I don't understand your dilema nor do I understand your complete contradiction of statements. First you say the images you've seen from the d200 are just stunning. Then you wonder about its ability to take pictures.

This canon vs nikon stuff is mostly absurd nonsense from non-photographers. Both are excellent systems and both make excellent images. Both have strengths and weaknesses. Neither is perfect.

If you're an amateur, you're really wasting your time and effort trying to find some miniscule advantage that will declare one better than the other. All of today's cameras are likely to be far more capable than you are.

Pick one that suits your fancy and budget and worry about improving your skills instead of the current silly topic of the day that the non-photographers are bleating about.

Thanks all.

Apologies to any who may have found what i wrote "contradictory"... was just stating that the posts i was reading and the shots i was seeing were complete opposites.

All your commentary is appreciated. The D200 has been ordered, and we shall hope for the best while shooting until the cows come home... and then shooting the cows when they're home, and then shooting them again when they leave again in the morning.

May the seven pillars of Bulu be with you at all times.

Hey, most likely you will be VERY satisfied with your D200. Let us know when you get it, and show us some samples!

Surely will Gerald. Thank you for the vote of confidence. I'll keep all my fingers and toes crossed and smile like the MAD Magazine coverman when the FedEX guy shows up... he might even get a hug from me.

Been running an Oly C-8080 for a long while now... great machine for what it is. could not have asked for a better learning tool. the D200 will be lovingly welcomed, cared for, and used as often as humanly possible.

I shall do my darndest to share photos ASAP. Only heaven knows how long it will take them to get the machine & Lens in, and ship it. in the mean time, we'll be shooting the crap out of my Oly.

Some excellent points from Steffen and Kerry the only thing I was going to add was a suggestion you go test drive each system as much as possible. Either will be capable of delivering wonderful images.

I see however I am too late (been busy wasting time posting crap in the FF wars threads ... sadly) and you have ordered the D200. I hope you enjoy it and find new passion/inspiration with it.

No need to apologize. There's been a deliberate attempt to frighten people about the banding issue, with overblown hype and hysteria that has been predominant on some sites. That makes it very confusing for folks like you.

It's a much better camera than the doom & gloomers portray, but it's not perfect. No camera is. In the end, it is you that will make good photos, not the camera.

Looking forward to seeing your pics of the cows at sunrise and sunset.
