p.1 #1 · D1 or Canon 300D?

I'm looking to get my first digital SLR, originally I decided on the Nikon D1 (vs the Canon 30D or Fuji S1) but prices for a complete setup, including body, starter lens (50mm), battery, and battery charger are running $400 or more. My budget was $350. So if I have to fork out an additional $50 or $100 (which will be tough to do right now) would I be better off getting a Canon 300D, which I have found several running around $450 plus shipping, including body, lens, battery, charger? My favorite camera is the good ole K-1000, I wish they made a digital one! My main uses are for my landscape design and native plant nursery business, meaning I need good close-up shots of plants and flowers, as well as landscape shots, as in before and after. Plus my own creative uses. And I plan on upgrading in several months, if and when we sell our house, and I can afford to plunk down around $1000, probably on a D1x or comprable.

TIA,
Natasha

No ... waaay no! The 300 is a very limited camera. I had one ... for about three weeks before I couldn't take it anymore and sold it to a friend. The D1 is everything that the rebel is not - except resolution and to a much less influential extent high iso noise. The files from the D1 are fine for fairly surprising print sizes I believe and you are much more likely to "get" the shot with it in your hand.
Go for the D1.

Don't make the decision based on the body, make it based on the available lenses. It's doubtful you'll have any resale value in either of those bodies, so the question becomes, which lens set do you want to start with? IMHO, it's basically a religious argument between Nikon and Canon these days -- both make great equipment. Then again, I shoot Nikon.

I would look at the market for lenses and ask youself, what's available and what are you willing to spend over the next several years and then see which setup gives you better bang for your buck. Don't make your decision based on a used body. You're buying into a lens platform, the body is a bolt-on.

Hi Natasha...

not to downplay nikon gear.... based on your budget. There are other options. My dad recently picked up a Fuji s9000 which is a decent camera which has a lot of options which sounds similar to your needs. It has good macro capabilities, good in low light, and affordable. Also will use several media types including CF. Its a little bit more than your budget, but worth the price. Something to consider.

Its not a DSLR - but very close in comparison. It has a 28-300mm range in comparison to 35mm

Natasha, how funny is it that I see you here. That was actually my auction that you had won. I saw this thread earlier and I thought about PMing you to see if you were interested in my auction.

Btw, I am sending you an email right now reguarding payment and to arrange a meeting time.

Yep, eBay. I got really lucky and won Trung's auction (a great deal on a D1: body, lens, batteries, charger, 1GB microdrive). I live in the town next to him, so I save on shipping too! Now maybe I can sleep tonight, without visions of D1s in my head. Probably not, now I'll be buzzing with anticipation. Slightly early birthday present to me! Yey! Thanks to all for the response, it was greatly appreciated!

BTW, Thanks for the welcome Pavel!

But Nikon Natasha might just be too cheesy. Maybe, just maybe, Nikon Nat. Or Nikon Gnat? We'll see when it's in my hands and not in my head!
