p.1 #1 · ND filter metering question and AF RF noise
I went out shooting yesterday with the wife (WE NEED TWO CAMERAS. :>) and two things I have questions on:
1) When the camera finally got cold (it was maybe 35 F out), both my 35L and 17-40L make a high pitched RF noise when focusing. The focusing was fast and slient and accurate on both, but the RF noise was really annoying in any quiet enviroment. I assume because both lenses did this it is something with my 300D? EDIT: I just tested again and the 35L is OK but the 17-40L is still making the high pitched RF noise about 1/2 the time.... any ideas? Happen to anyone else?
2) I got a 1.8 HD B&W filter for the holidays. I threw it onto the 17-40 and the metering was WAY off. (ie. too dark) My assumption is is when I turned a F4 lens into a F32 lens neither the AF or metering is going to be accurate. I'll need to focus and setup the metering in M mode.
Metered 1/3 of sec with f11 before the filter. With the filter, the camera metered at 1 2/3 of a second. It should have been a ton higher than that. I will say you couldn't really SEE anything through the viewfinder it was so dark.

Schlotkins,
That particular filter brings the exposure down by 6 stops. That's a pretty big adjustment. I think that kind of filter would be best used in REALLY bright sunlight when shooting a river/water fall and you want to use a REALLY long exposure to get that "dreamy" water effect.
For most scenes, a 1 or 2 stop ND may be all you need to bring the exposure down to balance the lighting in a scene.
p.1 #5 · ND filter metering question and AF RF noise
The use of a Neutral Density filter shouldn't change the ability of the AF or Exposure,
unless there is not enough light getting through the combination to accomplish AF.
What are you shooting that needs a six stop ND filter (just curious)?
