p.1 #1 · Help me please- 2G Elite Pro or 1G Ulta II

Now that I am shooting mostly raw, I find my 2- 512 Ultra II cards limiting. I want to spend less than $100. Should I go for the slightly slower Elite Pro which will give me 2G or go with old reliable- 1G Ultra II?

I shoot in burst mode often and will fire 3-6 shots at a time occaisionally.

Thanks in advance

I've been using a couple of 2gb Elite Pros for awhile. I have not had any problems shooting burst shots with my 1D2. I would not think you will have problems with them on your 20. By the way Buy.com has the 2gb Elite Pros on sale for $90 after rebate. I would be grabbing some if I didn't already have enough for my needs.

I've got 5 of the Elite Pro 2GB CF cards and love them. I've got 2 1GB Ultra2's and don't use them as much as the Elite Pro cards. Buy.com is a good source for the Elite Pro's.

You could also consider the the transcend 80x's from newegg.com. Ive got a 1 and a 2 gig elite pro and they work fine. Not as fast obviously as my lexar 80x'ers but Ive never had a problem.

I have found that the 20D doesn't take advantage of high speed cards, so I would just buy the size you need.

I have a 1Gb Ultra II card and it has been very reliable, so has my 512 and 2 256 cards. I use a X-Drive for a really cheap solution for storage (In terms of $ per GB) you cant beat a portable HD solution IMO!

If you find yourself filling the buffer on your 512 cards, then I would suggest going with the 1GB ultra II. The elite pro will be a bit slower to clear the buffer:

Are you sure about that? I know on the 10D, it didn't take advantage of the ultra fast cards but on the 20D it does. My Sandisk Ultra II is faster than my 4GB microdrive and Rob Galbraith's benchmarks proves it.

How fast a card can the 20D actually utilize? What is the fastest the 20D can actually write?

You have found wrong. Maybe your confused and mean the write acceleration?

I had a Lexar 1gb 80X card (equivalent to the Ultra II), sold it to a friend and bought a 2gb Elite Pro. Although the Lexar benches out a bit faster, I haven't found the speed difference on my 20D to be a problem at all and much prefer 2gb for the same price.

I think most would agree with me but some probably won't.

I have a 512MB Ultra II and a 2GB regular sandisk card. I tested by shooting RAW in continuous mode. The camera took the same number of pictures before the buffer filled up, and it tok the same amount of time between pictures as the buffer was thrashing. I also timed the number of pictures it took withing a minute and noticed no difference.

So, either the 2GB regular card is really fast, or the Ultra II didn't buy me anything.
