Had a chance to visit the new Georgia aquarium last week. I brought only the D60 w/o grip and a 50/1.4 and was in awe just like every other tourist, especially when I saw the whale sharks. This guy will be as large as a school bus when he matures.
We went last Tuesday but they were sold out of tickets and the reservations weren't available until the following week. How much glare and reflection do they have on the viewing windows there?
Re: questions on glare and polarizer. Surprisingly, there was very little glare and no need for a polarizer. If you go to the aquarium, I would go early before the glass gets fingerprinted. Definitely bring along a fast lens. I thought the 50mm was ideal length although several displays begged for wider.
Wow, I thought you had an underwater housing. Nice shot!
I visited the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago on my trip there last year.
To sum it up: I was a total newbie at the time, left my 300D at ISO100, shot the 50/1.8 wide open. The shots were soft AND had camera shake. Then I cranked it to ISO1600, but then it was just soft and noisy. Ouch.
But I do have one shot that is still among my favorites, so it was totally worth it
Hey John, I was going to go this week while the kids are out of school, but its completely booked every day until school starts again, and then on a couple of the following weekends. I'm going on Friday the 13th (!). I was thinking of taking my 50 f/1.4 too (with my XT), and perhaps even the 85 f/1.8 - or would the added length just be a waste? What ISO did you use? Is that Ralph or Norton?
Ed: you will enjoy the aquarium. I don't think you will need anything longer than the 50, but you might want to bring along something wider as well. I was shooting pretty much at f/2 to f/2.8 and 400/800 ISO. Check out the Atlanta member boards...we're planning an outing there in mid-January.
Guy, you're right...those rubber hoods do come in handy for glass where there is a high glare factor.
Thanks John, and sorry, I forgot to mention it is a great shot. Where are the Atlanta member boards? I unfortunately don't have anything wider in my bag yet. Doh!
