p.1 #1 · Wide angle lens

Im looking for a good all purpose lens that has some wide angle capabilities. Ive been looking at the Nikkor 24-120mm VR, but there is a lot of mixed reviews. I shoot a Nikon D70, and mostly do landscapes, city scapes, and I will shoot the occasional wedding. Any suggestions?

I like my 24-85... although I wish it was a constant 2.8.

Of course, the 24-120 isn't a 2.8... but it does have VR.

Ive looked at the 24-85, that does have a macro function does it not? Does the VR work that well. I here that the image sharpness is only adequate.

I don't know. Some people tell me the pictures I get with that lens are nothing short of delicious.

Also think about the fact that there is the 1.5x crop factor so a 24mm lens isnt really all that "wide" on a d70.

I have the cheapo kit lens (18-70) and I love it to death but I am left wishing for wider.

Those images do look great. Was that with the 24-85? or the 24-120?

That is the 24-85, 2.8-4.

You can focus close, or go macro for a little closer.

It's really not a bad little lens. Here is a shot at 2.8 ISO 1000 at 24mm:

In your price range you can pick from the following three;

Sigma 12-24 @$699.00
Tokina 12-24 @ $499.00
Sigma 10-20 @ $499.00

Any of these would compliment the list of lenses you already have.

I second Scott's recommendation of the 24-85. I have the G version which doesn't have macro capability, plus it's f/3.5. However, it's about 300 bux after rebates and does an amazingly good job.

But, if you're wanting wide, I love my 12-24 Nikkor. You can do some really neat stuff at 12mm All of the lenses that DGC1 listed are great as well.

You already have a fine all purpose lens in the 18-70. I have the 24-85 and it's great ................ but not wide enough for landscaptes.

If you want to go wider than 18 you should look at the following:
sigma 15-30: on my "to try" list
Tokina 17 (I just bought one and am looking forward to checking it out)
Sigma/Tokina 12-24
Nikon 17-35:

Those are all good suggestions. I like my 18-70 DX, but I wouldnt mind something a little faster. How about the Sigma lenses, has anyone had any luck with them?

The best all purpose lens "WITH "a wide angle capability and versatile zoom range would probably be the 18-70 DX. If you can afford the 17-55 it should offer slightly better IQ with faster apertures but it`s a bit short on reach..
You have to know that 24mm (36 mm on Nikon bodies) at the low end just isn`t wide enough period.
If you choose a lens that starts at 24mm then you should also consider something like a Tokina 12-24 for the wide end..

For wide, I'd go with the 12-24mm f/4 from Tokina. Constant f/4 aperature and has the quality of the $1000 nikon 12-24mm. For a wide-zoom, I'd go with the kit lens(18-70mm), hands down, and skip the 24-120.

I've got the 24-120 and I've been very happy. The range and VR are hard to beat.

The 24 really will be a 36mm so it's not too wide. My vote is for the Tokina 12-24mm for around $480.00. Solid lens that takes great photos.

Effie

GREAT reds in that pic!!!!! .............

Can you give some details on the post-processing of the that pic.

FWIW: One of the very few things I didn't like about my D70 was how reds looked. Never did get anything as good as that pic of yours.
