Hi there, you're not alone and in fact the Canon user's community over on Naturescapes.net has sent a letter suggesting this and other "easy" DSLR fixes/features to Canon. The letter was rec'd by Chuck Westfall and forwarded to another Canon rep. Both Chuck and the additional Canon rep replied and assured us that the suggestions in the letter would be forwarded to Japan and that Canon does indeed make great efforts to address users' concerns.
Kudos go to EJ Peiker for drafting and sending the letter.

Excellent. Hopefully Canon will "take our concerns on board" (to use US style business speak  ) and give us a fix.
