Yikes! First is the original image at full resolution and the second is a cropped version to show where the purple fringing occurrs. Why does this happen? Is it the fact that I'm using a camera with 5 year old technology or is it a lens function?
This isn't the worst I've seen. It usually occurs in high contrast edges and can be caused by a combination of factors. These usually include wide angle lenses and how light hits the photosites, interpolation algorithms of a Bayer pattern on the sensor, AA filters and the lighting situation itself. This was more common with earlier technology but it still occurs quite often.
Everything marc said......
I will add that, my Kodak slr/n would purple fringe worse than any digital I've seen, and it was a combination of the factors marc mentioned. Typically, it was worse shooting backlit subjects. I just didn't shoot that many backlit subjects with that camera AFAIK, Kodak doesn't use AA filters on their sensors, and that makes the problem worse.
Well, I am not too worried about it...I just found it much more noticeable than on my Sigma SD10 and my D70. I guess I will watch those high contrast situations...I think that is what did it this time.
