p.1 #1 · Need Help using ACR & D2X Raw Files

Okay guys, I need your help. I've switched to using ACR 3.2 to process my D2X raw files since the D2X "as shot" white balance data is now recognized by the Adobe software. I'm getting good results but I need to better understand how to use the software for maximum image quality.

I'm confused as to what settings to use in ACR preferences. I use the "as shot" white balance most of the time. But I'm unsure of what other settings to use for best results. For instance, are you folks using the "Auto" settings for exposure, shadows, contrast, sharpness, noise reduction, etc? If not, what types of settings are you using most of the time as a default starting point? Are you doing noise reduction, if any, in ACR or in PS CS2 after the fact? Also, are you saving your ACR preferences as a custom setting with a unique name or as the default setting?

Thanks very much, Rick.

Its really too much of a question to answer because there is so much that I do, and do differently, depending on what I am shooting...

For the most part I have absolutely ditched the auto settings because I think they suck, and I switched to a linear curve for a while but then back to the standard 'medium contrast' curve...

White balance is really a taste thing, I find, and I like a lot of images a bit warmer than other people, so I tend to adjust each image to where I like it rather than where I shot it... Although when I am doing something that involves a lot of images, I try and preset the white balance to get it right at the start...

I use the batch processing commands a lot, where you can adjust one image, select a bunch and then apply the previous conversion to them as well, which helps save a lot of time.

I have played with the noise reduction a bit, but honestly, I havent shot too much real high ISO stuff lately so it hasnt been too much of a thought... the camera is pretty good as it is, although I found the highest setting for in camera noise reduction way too strong.

The batch commands kind of leaves me not having to name particular settings, and I dont have any saved for future use... I think its best to group the images by exposure and then fix the first, batch the rest and then fine tune anything that isnt great.... for portraits and the high end stuff, thats the basic proofing setup... everything thereafter is redone totally from scratch by hand and processed extensively afterwards...

I use ACR fairly extensively. I do not auto anything. I use the as shot WB, set the exposure to 0 compensation, shadows to 9, and adjust contrast and brightness to suit. Different scenes will require a different type of processing. Low contrast scenes will need a bump in contrast and shadows. High contrast scenes will require a reduction in contrast and you may need to set the shadows to zero. I usually expose for the highlights, but sometimes i don't mind blowing out something a little because you can recover it better out of ACR than you can NC. For High ISO shots, i use NC4.3 because it has a better algorithm for processing noise from Nikon cameras than does ACR. I also make sure I have the highlight warning on in ACR to let me know what is being blown out.

hope this helps.

Seriously the best advice is to go get yourself a copy of real world camera raw, by Bruce Fraser. It will explian everything you need to know about ACR and more.

Cheers
