p.6 #1 · Zeiss/Oly -> 5D Compatibility List

1Ds mirror shave info.

I use a Dremmel with the diamond blade #545. ($15). I also wear a dust mask, no one knows what the mirror is made of. Lift up the mirror about half way, and hold it there with some blobs of poster tack. (Some people call it blue tack). Take some wide painters/masking tape, and mask off the chamber opening. Make sure to pay special attention to where the tape fits around the mirror to get a good seal. The 1Ds needs both the mirror and metal frame shaved a bit. But not so far that when up it misses the foam pads under the focus screen. It still needs to land there when up. (I don't know what the 5D has for an up-position rest.) The Dremmel is held parallel to the camera body, and you slowly push the small grinding wheel ahead along the edge of the mirror taking off a tiny bit at a time. When done, use a sharpie to blacken out the cut. Then, hold camera upside down and use your Giottos rocket blower to get as much dust out of there as possible. Open and close the mirror a number of time to shake any debris off that as well, and keep using the rocket blower.

As far as Olympus Zuiko OM goes, I've used them for years since I got my 10D (never used a Canon lens on it!) and still use them with my 5D (but now sometimes also use a 16-35/2.8L as well).

Lenses I've used which are not yet on your list are as follows:

8/2.8 circular fisheye
20/2* macro (on the 65-116 tube)
35/2.8
38/2.8* macro (on the 65-116 tube)
50/1.4
80/4* macro (on the 65-116 tube)
85/2
135/2.8
135/4.5* macro (on the 65-116 tube)
180/2.8
300/4.5
500/8

I've also used the Zuiko OM 1.4x and 2x teleconverters with success.
Also, I picked up an Arsat 80/2.8 T/S lens with OM mount and that also works fine on both the 10D and 5D.

Thankyou Neil! I'll update the list ASAP. Could you specify the adapter used with your Zuikos, please?

Ciao,

Emanuele

Hi Emanuele,
I use the Kindai adapter from Japan.

Is it possible that someone could post some corner crop samples from their Oly 21 3.5 images. I am still not happy with mine and would love to see what results athers are getting.

Cheers

Rusty

Ok, here's one (first time I'm doing this)

Full shot on 5D:

Notice the DOF, those crops were chosen on purpose being from very different distances. Must have been f11 or f8. Low left corner isn't as good:

Excellent!! Thanks so much. I now know just how bad my results really are. Your lower left is still heaps better than my best :-(

The other corners are very impressive.... I will investigate my adapter some more (I am now thinking that it's spacing a bit thin) and might put the lens in for a service just to be sure.

You know the general wisdom about manual wides:
Don't trust the DOF scales
Infinity focus is home base, always go from there. If you have a nearer subject, just adjust a tiny bit strating from infinity.
Shoot at f8 or f11. Avoid the other stops. Heavy vignetting and low contrast below, softness due to difraction above.
Once you understand this, the Oly really is a very sweet thing....

I was very disappointed when I first got my Oly too. Before sending it to repair or buying a new adapter, try other focusing techniques.
Here are a few others:

Now you may not always get the DOF you expect. For exemple:

Lower left corner is very sharp, since it should be on the focussing plane of a couple of feet:

but here is the top right corner:

It's soft, since it's outside of the infocus zone. But of course, it doesn't matter, since those houses are just the background, and not the center of attention.

I only got it a couple of weeks ago and still have to experiment to get the best settings, but I think it's worthwhile.

You can also notice the vignetting on these shots. My copy vignettes very heaviliy up to f8, and still quite visibly beyond.

belsha - in the first oly21 pic, how many feet were you from the STOC sign and the fence.
