p.4 #1 · Eyepiece magnifier on Canon bodies

ForeverUnknown wrote: 1.2x magnification doesn't seem like much, but on a small viewfinder like the 20D, it does help a lot.

Sidney: Thanks for the followup.

Whats your verdict?
Usefull enought to say on the camera all the time or just now and then?
Is all viewfinder info is still clearly visible?
Also, can you post a before and after viewfinder pic with the body outdoors?

Thanks again!

I leave mine on all the time
I took it off for a second the other day, and I hated the smallness of the viewfinder

you can easily see the viewfinder information

I love mine on my XT. The only downsides:

- On the XT the status LCD is on the back right under the viewfinder and the large eyecup makes it harder to see. You're forced to view it from the 6 o'clock position and the LCD is designed for 12 o'clock viewing so you lose a little contrast. I rarely check that LCD except when I first turn on the camera to check WB and drive mode so no big deal.

- Eye position is obviously more critical to keep everything in view. Sometimes this is a little more awkward when tripod mounted at a low hieght (say stomach level), but handholding it is fine.

More than made up for by the upsides:

- Image seems way larger than it should given it is only 1.2x. I can't stand viewing without it now.

- Don't have to smush my face against the back of the camera as much.

- The real eyecup cuts out way more ambient light which more than makes up for any loss of brightness from the 1.2x mag.

One big downside that isn't a problem for me:

- A friend with a 300D found that he had trouble using this since he wears glasses and can't get his eye close enough for a clear easy view of the whole frame and status info.

I just put one of these together, and I'm not sure I'm going to keep it. I also just bought a Canon Magnifier S. So I will practice with both of them this weekend and decide which one to keep.

Now that some of you have used this for some time what are your thoughts on it? Do you really feel it makes a differnce when MF?

I use mine all the time on my XT though not just specifically for MF. I think it does make a difference when I do MF though.

Does anyone know where I would be able to get the Nikon 2370 eyepiece adaptor? I haven't been able to locate any online stores that have it in stock, and there don't seem to be any available on eBay. Better yet, if anyone can tell me where I can get it from in Sydney, Australia, that would be fantastic! Thanks for any help! Cheers.

hey,

this looks real interesting, i think it would be pretty useful for me...

roughly how much do those nikon bits cost, and how fragile is the piece you need to widen?

the canon magnifier s- would that not give full frame like this then?

I recently got one of these for my 20D and it works just fine without my glasses, but is actually worse with my glasses on than the standard eye cup. But then that's not the idea behind using it.

If anyone is looking for some of these parts, I have the DK-17M and the DK-2 rubber eyecup but I do not have the 2370 eyepiece adapter. Both are brand new. PM me if you are interested.

And the answer is.................... ?

And the answer is Yes

Didn't know this thread was still active. All EOS eyepieces fit items like the EP-EX15 extender. Also, if you want a straight center magnifying flip up eyepiece for macro , I use a Nikon DG-2 (2X) magnifier. This screws onto the 2370 adapter which slides onto canon eyepieces. You can find the DG-2 pretty cheap on eBay. I got mine for $25 which is a lot cheaper than the Canon. As for the Nikon 2370 adapter, they're only $3.95 US from B&H but I guess they are out of stock there. They're pretty common on eBay search "Nikon eyepiece adapter"

Thanks for the answers, I got the DK 7 and DK2 from B&H and the Nikon DK-17M out of China BUT it got lost in the mail, never again will I buy out of China or off of EvilBay the dumping ground for broken crap.
Now all I need is the Nikon Eyepiece Adapter and the DK-17M .... again

How many glass elements are in the DK-17m magnifying eyepiece?

Just the one?

I might have to give this a try - I just want something more comfortable.

i just want to make sure i am understanding this... this is not for people with glasses?

i'm interested in this, but i only take my glasses off to sleep so if it doesn't work with glasses then it's not for me.

not true
I cleaned my eyepiece under some running water, thinking the same thing
and water got in between the two elemets, and I had to heat up the eyepiece to boil the water off

Yep... two... at first I thought one, but if it were one, it would have been as thick as a Coke bottle (the glass ones that is).

Wow, learn something new every day! Thanks for the correction. Now that I think about it I guess it makes sense that if you wanted a true magnifier you'd probably need two elements to do it. And I'll be sure to be careful cleaning it now too .
