I am looking for a tele for my D2h. I have looked at zooms mostly but have now been looking more and more at Nikon AF-S 300 f4.
Is there anyone who could share their experience with this lens/combo with and without TC. Please show me some pictures too.
I think I will get a 1,4x and 1,7x to this lens if I buy it.
You will simply love this lens This is w/o 1.4Tele, but with it, it works great. Maybe a tad slower but I mostly use this for bird shooting. I hav been testing it with sports and it does quite well but not as fast as my 70-200 If you don't mind used I may have mine up for sale Im just not sure if I want to part with it? If I do I will certainly PM you if you are still looking. MIne is not even 3 months old but I am making more money than I thought doing sports and I may need to step into a diffrent beast all together, the 200f2.0 or 300f2.8. If you end up withg this lens it is truely one of the great sleeper lenses out there. I love how light it is and it focuses very close. This pic does not really show off its defocus ability but it is all I had . Good Luck

RT,
I know you will get a lot of sports advice about this lens so I though I would post a few non-sports shots I have done with it. In this first one you will see the close focusing ability.
I shoot a lot of motorsports with the lens too, but I am not able, due to copyright issues to post much of it here. The lens is not as fast as the 2.8 version, but in strong light it will track an IRL car coming at you at 220 on a D2H or X body with no trouble at all. I have never used the new TC1.7 on it but I use the 1.4 all of the time. It does degrade the image a tiny bit and it does make it a little slower to focus. On a D-100 or D-70 it is a real dog with the TC
Thanks alot everyone for posting your experience and photos. It seems like a very sharp tele with very little quality loss with 1,4x and good quality with 1,7x.
I don`t shoot any sports myself, so I will mostly use it for wildlife shooting.
Is there any other options you would rather recomend in same price category?
How about the Sigma 100-300/f4? I just picked up the new DG version for $900. Its super-sharp, and the AF seems a little quicker and quieter than the Sigma 70-200/f2.8 I had. I've never tried the Nikon 300/f4, but this Sigma is great.
Having owned both the Sigma 100-300 f/4 and currently the Nikon 300mm f/4 AFS, I eventually sold the Sigma and kept the Nikon. Found that I was out on the 300mm end of it more than anything else and just made more sense to stick with the Nikon. The Sigma was great for composing due to the zoom range, but didn't use it for that, so it went.
As for image quality wise, I think very few would be unhappy with the 300mm f/4 AFS for the price. Here's my bird gallery, mostly taken with the D70 and 300mm f/4 AFS.
