p.1 #1 · Filter or lense issue (17-55dx)?

Hi there,

I just got the 17-55dx and after testing it last night I noticed something strange. If you look at the picture on this URL http://www.gunni.is/lense/ you can see that right over the windscreen the license plate is refected upside down. Two green dots are on each side, probably reflection of the car light.

The question is, what is causing this? Is it possibly the Skylight 1A filter 77mm from ROWI I am using? Is it a lense defect, it does not look like a flaire does it?

Another question, maybe I should not be using a Skylight filter on it? Where can I find top-of-the-line filters, that for sure do not degrade the lense performance? Should I be using a clear filter from Nikon?

Thanks and best regards,
Gunnar Ingvi

I would expect it is your filter causing the problem. All filters degrade lens performance to some degree; If you really feel you need a filter, I would buy a good multi-coated version, although even that may not help with a DSLR.

You know, the hood for the 17-55 is so large that apart from maybe a piece of stone flying straight towards the front element, not much is going to ever touch the front element let alone damage it.

all I know is my 17-55 is so good it almost carries the camera for me and takes the pictures.

I have never had a single problem and shoot in all kinds of conditions.

Looks like an internal reflection to me - a filter might well degrade the image but I doubt it could turn something upside down. My guess is the reflection from the flash off the number plate and the inner reflective surfaces of the headlights have maxed out the lens coatings so yes, I'd say it is flare.

I would take the filter off personally.

I used to put filters on all the time but that lens hood is so gynormous the chances of front element damage is slim.
