p.1 #1 · Max lense weight for D70s?

Hi all

I was wondering how heavy a lense my D70s can handle if I carry it in my shoulder strap, so that the camera is hangind in the strap with the lense mounted? I havent found this information in the manual, and Im buying a quite heavy lense soon, and I just dont wanna risk damaging my lense mount

Best regards
Søren

I sometimes carry my camera around my neck with the 80-400 OS attached (approx 2kgs or 4 lbs) and even the SB800 flash (when I do so it is for like 10 minutes). Otherwise I carry the combo holding the tripod mount which can be used as a very practical handle. No problems so far....(got the impression my neck will break before the camera)

Thanks for all of your replys, i feel more safe carrying the combo now, and i liked the idea of carrying it in the tripod mount, maybe i can make some strap to attach to the tripod mount

Best regards
Søren

When you start getting into the tele zoom range greater than 300 - tripod mounts are on the lens - not body anymore. The mount can only take so much weight.

Even my 80-200 has a pod mount - I would never think of mounting the camera from the body - the lens weighs 3lbs.

I think you also have to take into consideration other weight factors as well. If you have a heavy lens attatched to your camera body it will not suffer too much when it is just hanging from your shoulder strap. With the same lens, the pressure of the weight increases against the lensmount when you hold the camera without supporting the lens. Add to this pressure any slight bump to the lens. Ultimately it will stress the lens mount. Why not just carry the camera with a light lens and mount the heavy one only when you will actually be taking a shot with it?

Hi all

So I bought the lense, and it had a strap attached to it All though I will mostly carry it in my backpack, its nice to have the option.

I also asked Nikon support about how much weight the D70s can carry like this. Im posting Nikon's reply here if anyone is interrested:

For normal use, your D70 should be able to carry the weight of a 300 mm telelense. I haven't been able to find any max. allowed weight - and I am not sure it exists. A D70 on a tripod can easily carry a lense of 1000. A load of 2000-3500 grams is also possible, however, if you carry the camera on your back while for example hillwalking, there is a potential risk of hitting something and thus causing damage to the mounting part.
