This camera might very well be the beginning of the end for many segments of the market now dominated by the SLR design. Looks like a great camera and it has the same basic imager that is inside the D2x with a Sony DSP.
Shoud be one to watch. I bet Dave Black gets one just for golf

Hmmm... anyone wanna bet the D200 will have the same sensor?
Different crop factors (1.65 vs. 1.5) so I think it's unlikely, unless they have also developed a very slightly bigger sensor off the same design.
It looks good on paper, but is it fast?
The greatest benefit of a DSLR to me is its speed.
Turns on fast, focuses fast, shoots fast, writes fast, flash recycles fast.
I've been frustated by the Point and Shoot Digital cameras in the past.

FYI
Sony is ready Now to cut FF 35mm sensors from the wafer that makes the D2x this new point and shoot and other cameras..........
So yes the new D200 could very easily use this sensor.
Also Sony was not ready when nikon was for D2h production (depending on who you choose to believe) and so LBCAST was used. Sony probably believes differently
Looks very interesting. I also don't know if an electronic viewfinder could be there yet. Eventually I think a larger finder could be fine for landscapes (like a view camera) but for wildlife, action, portraits, etc. I don't see it being practical.

will we see coolpix with this sensor within few moths?
I doubt that as Nikon is in charge of that brand , but surely from Sony we will see more from this wafer. One of these wafers can make hundreds of P&S sensors

who needs a EVF with a huge LCD display , I would never turn it on .........

I cant use the LCD to shoot at all either.. perhaps I am obsolete in this regard, but I need to get my face pressed up against the camera in order to feel like I am taking pictures...

I read the entire "preview" and came to the conclusion: It's a b@astard design and won't sell well. Just look at the comparison pics to the Canon XT. The XT is smaller and it has more features/power/speed than this Sony dougie.
An APS sensor'd PS camera is a GREAT idea................ this one is just not well thought out. Make it small and powerful/fast and it will sell-sell-sell. This Sony is huge-huge-huge. What were they thinking And I'm a fan of Sony HW!!!

I need to clarify my sentence , I would never turn the EVF on. The LCD is a dream. I came from the point and shoot domain and I really Miss the LCD
many folks are uncomfortable in front of a SLR but can look very natural in front of a TLR . there are compelling reasons for a camera like this sony
As far as the Electronic Viewfinder goes, if they haven't made an improvement over the Minolta Dimage, forget it. Anybody that has ever tried panning at any rate of speed with a Dimage got image stutter, etc. If they can make it work, though, it could be interesting.
As far as using the LCD goes, I'm used to the Viewfinder myself. I know a lot of people want live LCD views on DSLR's, and to each their own. Personally though, it doesn't interest me.
I can use the LCD to shoot it actually helps me to compose but they put it in the wrong place. Judging by the photos I don't see how this lcd can flip so I can look straight down at the camera it just doesn't seem to be in the most ideal location.
A fun part of this camera will be the focal length of the lens, which is really intesesting.. A real 24-120!!!
So far, I don't think anyone out there have an equivalent of such lens on DSLR except the fullframe Canon with the latest 24-105. (Just a kind reminder: the Canon 17-85 on XT will become 27.2-136 and The nikon 18-70 on D70 will become 27-120. I am not saying that the extra 3mm or 3.2mm difference will give you a main advantage but it's quite handy to have 24mm without switching lenses).Besides, this lens is a f2.8 at the wide size and f4.8 on the tele-side.
In addition, the price (at $999US retail price) is good for a 10.8mp (w APS size chip) with a decent Carl Zeiss T* lens.
Of course, you will missed the ultra-wide side and the tele-side as compared to the DSLR. But for what you paid, I guessed it is really amazing.
I really like to get a high quality little DC to carry along with the DSLR. I guessed this is an even more interesting camera than the Leica digilux 2. The digilux 2 have a very fine lens but the chip suffered with the noise at high ISO (beyond ISO400) due to the size of the chip. The price is too high as well..
There are few drawbacks with this DC. First, the size is a bit bigger than I would like. It's almost like carrying a SLR. Secondly, I don't like the idea of "focus by wired" thing too. Thirdly, the EVF. However, I can live with them IF the optical quality is impressive!..... IF they can add back the Video capture ability on the camera, this will be an excellent "video/camera". (ie You can always capture some high quality (640x480) movie clip) But I don't think they will do it because this will create competition with their latest HD-DV camcorder
Let's see what will be the "shuttle lag" and what will be the "noise level" at
1600 and 3200.
actually, when I think about it again.. The CMOS chip is potentially the D200 or a slightly lower resolution version of the D2X. At this price, with a decent lens, it is a real good deal.
