Shooting my grandkids on the beach with my D100, I worried about using my 70-200 vr in the misty weather. I wished I had spent $100 for that 70-300 f4-5.6, but it got so many bad reviews that I wasn't sure about the good ones. Any FMers used this thing? I'm guessing it'd be OK for snapshots with plenty of light, but they say its soft full out.

Ur 70-200 VR is a pro Nikkor lens... It can take more than a little mist. You could always get cheapo rain cover.

I have had success with the D model of the 70-300 zoom. I can post samples if you like.

Unfortunately most who comment on certain lenses like the 70-300 D never owned one. I always used to challenge them and ask "did you shoot with it?".
"Well no", but my friend told me or I read on the web. blah, blah, blah...

I agree with Tazo the D model was excellent. It worked very well for me and my helpers for venues where the big glass just wasn't allowed to walk around with. Like things the Secret Service does. You know tea parties...

Of course bring the big glass and set up at the back of the room on a tripod.. Then you are not mobile but the smallish 70-300 was great.

We used it for event work with flash and weddings and just about everything and you couldn't beat it for the price or the quality for a sub 300 dollar lens.

And sharp..yes and it prevents hernias......
