"Grey" market... non US warranty. I don't know how it works.
You pays yore money and you takes yore chances.
Prolly worth considering for the VERY low tech 50/1.8
I've got my 50/1.4 but I'm not too sure why... just thought I had to I guess. I think I consider it my portrait lens, though the 18-70 DX does great there too. Are ya seein' a trend here?
You can find good used 50mm for $60 to 80. Nothing worry about warranty or gray market. I will not complain about grey market (imported) 50mm f/1.8 because not expensive lens.
Oh! So their not warrentied? Then screw that, I'd rather have the 5 year warrenty for an extra 5 bucks LMAO. (I found it elsewhere for like 5 bucks more, the USA 5 year warrenty version
Actually they are ALL imported. Made in the China plant. What DOES make the difference is whom has imported. Nikon USA will only warranty, in fact only touch a lens that has been brought in via them. Any retailer that has brought them in via another route (was not bought through Nikon USA distribution) is considered grey market or "import" and will be warranted via the retailer only.
I didn't see in the ad what they meant by imported. I assume they mean it's grey market and at that price, as you have found, it may not be worth the price for lack of corporate warranty.
Oooops! Read the ad again. Their incredible price includes their own 1 yr warranty. Therefore, it is a so called "grey" market. They brought in the lens outside of the Nikon USA distribution vehicle.
In this case, even if you wanted to pay for a repair on the lens (not sure why when a repair more than likely would cost more than the lens itself) Nikon would not repair it for you.
I have been using this lens for quite some time now and let me tell you it is a very sharp lens and is worth the price of the lens they are asking for. If you want proof, I will e -mail you some photos taken by this lens.

I don't think the sharpness is the question here. The lens is almost legendary as is the 50mm Leica and the origional Pentax 50mm.
The question is the route it took through import to this country. Actually who brought it in is a better statement.
Nikon USA or the "other guys". Now the other guys can be B&H or Adorama who have their own import lines 'which is called grey market".
Unknown to many there is also really grey market, literally black market which are products that went to counties with favorable dollar exchanges and then brought to the USA. Some film on some store counters may of gone around the world literally after being shipped from Rochester to say Florida. It just took 20,000 miles to get there but the price was right. It was Kodak export and it got frequent flyer miles.....
