...well, not quite, but I do need some input here. Currently shooting with a 3 month old D2X, and hey, like I need to rattle on about how good it is! Yep, I love it. Problem being, I now am working enough that I need a back-up body. The logical choice says pop out and grab another D2X, howver, the finance dept' says otherwise

Guys/girls, as we do not yet have a D200 (and I can only speculate as to what spec' and when it will lob), I am left with either a D70s or perhaps a S3 Pro

I do not need the back-up to match the speed of the D2X, and I can live with the lack of CAM 2000 etc etc. Would love some input here folks

Well its a hard one isn't it Pete, i'm thinking of getting a D2X as the waiting for a D200 is just getting longer and longer!!!
I want to use the D100 as my backup/2nd body but i'm still hanging out to see what will happen with the D200.
What sort of photography do you shoot? I like the D100 with the vertical grip but the only thing it lacks is buffer space, shooting RAW as i do, is sometimes fustrating when i'm shoooting sunset, but apart from that i find the D100 adequate for what i do at the moment.
The D70 and D70s has good buffering and good flash sync's too...

Hey Jun,

I once shot with the D100 also and am still a fan! Most of my work is people, corporate events, live musicians, and some landscape when I get the chance to get away

It is a tricky one as you say. The "D200" I can only assume would be perfect, however, I can't see myself waiting for it's much talked about release, perhaps early next year

I'm hanging but i know that right now i am getting the most out of the D100 via post processing and its all coming together.. I think i have the patience to wait for the D200 as the D2X is not really a neccessity at the moment.
But good luck with your purchase, i've always owned Nikon and while at this stage it feels fustrating, i don't think i could pack in my lenses and bodies for a Canon outfit..

ah, the price of success.

How the flash behaves may sway you - does the D70 have the same iTTL stuff as used by the D2x whereas the D100/S3 uses an older/different technology?

Good call Chris...I beleive the D70s does benefit from iTTl, and am also quite sure the Fuji does as well...hmmm..hang on, back in a moment mate, you've got me thinking..

Have you considered a used D2H as your backup, they can be bought very reasonably now and the transition from one body to the other is virtually seemless, hell you even get a spare battery (identical) for your D2X

I gotta tell ya, that since I got my D2h, I hardly use the D100 - which might be a real shocker for most - being that the D100 has more res. Its funny too about my attitude towards shooting has change entirely when I got the D2h - now I shoot RAW all the time on both camera's, and I have discovered just recently that spot metering is ten times better than matrix in nearly 80% of most situations... I don't get overexposure problems anymore, and I am much happier with my exposures.

Hey, Pete. It sounds to me like you're using flash a lot in your business (congrats, BTW), which would largely eliminate the D100--sad to say--from the competition. The 2 series and D70 use the iTTL, which, unlike the DTTL of the D100, actually works with the SB800 or 600.

I'd go to a well-stocked camera store and handle a 2H and 70s, and see which comes closest to matching the ergonomics and control lay-out of your 2X. I some times use both my D100 and N80, and the few little buttons that were moved between the models often screw me up badly!

If your clients demand 6+mpx, it looks like you're stuck with the 70.

Get a used D2H. I had the D70 and replaced it with a second D2H. The resolution on the D70 is not a factor unless you crop a lot. I decided to keep my twins a while and remain shooting while the D2X came into the market place. Mean while the bugs are being worked out and my guess would be the price will dribble downward as time moves forward. The D2H is a very fine body that will compliment your X very nicely. If you want a cheap 2nd worker bee the D70 is your only choice. Boy do I relate to this scenary and continue to wait. Im really curious to see what Nikon does with this new D100 replacement. If all goes well I would like to have The X, H and D200,

I would second the D2H as a backup too...

Switching viewinders is just so hard when you go back to the D70

The battery thing is nice, the ability to mount them on the same bracket if need be helps too.

Also, you can get something like 160 raw files on a 1gb card, so a backup 512 still makes sense...

I'll have to go with the D2H suggestion also. After buying mine my D70 sits quite a bit. I also learned how to compose in the frame better so cropping is not such an issue.

As mentioned going to the D70/s/D50 viewfinder after the D2X will be a big eye opener (sorry).

Oh BTW, make mine a MIller Lite!

Thanks all for the words of wisdom. Such a pleasure to post here as usual. I do have a small confession to make however. I sold my D100 to afford a new D2H. I then sold the H to afford the X, and now agree with you guys, I want my H back again! Geez, talk about full circle. I guess at the time I flicked the H I really didn't think I would be needing a second body. Okay, back to ebay I guess
