p.1 #1 · Fill Flash on D2h

OK, I am trying to figure this out - and need some help. I want to use my flash in daylight only as a fill - and yet my D2h will not let me sync faster than 1/250 - how do I get it to sync with a higher shutter speed for outdoors? Cause, I really don't want to have to use a higher stop to acheive fill flash. OR can I not... I had the Thom Hogan guide around here somewhere, but I can't find it right now, I was hoping to find my answer there.

Can someone please assist me with this question. Thanks!

You have to go in the custom setting menu on the camera, and set the camera flash settings to 1/250 + FP.

This will allow you to use flash settings up to 1/8000s.

Keep in mind that when using High Speed Sync, the light available for fill falls off drastically.

AUTO FP High-Speed Sync Flash
This feature allows the photographer to select a shutter speed faster than the camera's 1/250-second flash sync speed to realize automatic fill-in flash in bright daylight. (When the SB-800 is used in combination with the Nikon D2H digital SLR). Shooting with the aperture wide open to achieve effective blurring of the background is one possibility this feature adds.

In the Custom Settings of the D2H, the feature can be set to function automatically when a shutter speed faster than the limit of the camera's built-in flash sync is selected, or if one is already set.

Hope this helps

-Memo

thanks guys, that's what I thought it was - but even after changing it to FP Auto - in manual mode, it won't let me go higher than 250... I have an SB-80 - is it because of the SB80??

Yes, I think it has to be the SB800 or 600 for it to work. From the info I found on the Web.

AUTO FP High-Speed Sync Flash
This feature allows the photographer to select a shutter speed faster than the camera's 1/250-second flash sync speed to realize automatic fill-in flash in bright daylight. (When the SB-800 is used in combination with the Nikon D2H digital SLR)

On my D2X the FP HS Sync mode is compatible with the SB600 and 800 but not with the SB-80DX, 28DX or 50DX

It's probrably the same for your D2H

I’m not much for flash, and it’s rare that I use my SB80-DX, and I’ve not tried fill flash in daylight with it but once, and it was a disaster. This thread is interesting. Good info that I’ve been too lazy to find out on my own. Does anyone know what an SB80-DX might be worth?

Fill flash is the bomb with the SB800, although if you were to shoot manually with the SB80DX you would probably get pretty decent results.I almost always use a diffuser of some kind unless I need to overpower the sun. Once you have learned how to master fill flash, most people will not even notice that you used flash accept you. The whole idea is to get just the right amount so it looks natural. I prefer manual when I really need control but am very satisfied with i-ttl when I am shooting weddings. I ownly use BL when I do not need consistancy. All of the options in the SB800 work for diffrent situations. Nikon dun good with this apeedlight. The whole SB800 CLS works wonderfully when you want to add more light and avoid bringing yourarsenal of strobes to a gig. With the foot that comes along you can put these buggers on small stands and botta bing your in business. I did this for a while to light up my back drop in the studio until I could afford another strobe and I also used the CLS at a wedding in Vegas for formal shots in one of the rooms. In time I would like to grab two more. They always come in handy
