There's a lot of rumors going around. Some say there will be an annoucement sometime this August (even next week). I'm not even going to guess what the specs are, there's so many possibilities. I'm looking forward to it though, whatever it is.

Personally I think you guys are kidding yourself if you think it is going to be full frame. That would leave a single model utilizing the EF-S lenses which Canon said will be supported for at least 5 more years PLUS why the heck would they undermine their big ticket items that they are getting between $5-8K for as well? Simply doesn't make sense to me business wise (re: money) nor does it fit into a 20D replacement spot in the lineup going FF. I think honestly if anything, it will still be 1.6 to support EF-S lenses, perhaps a boost in resolution up to 10-12 Meg, $2500 sounds about right pricewise to me, maybe even closer to $2000. Probably have a built in battery grip as well. Guess we can see how it shakes out though when the announcement is made. I personaly think a lot of people that are hoping for FF are going to be disappointed though.

prrttttt!

all this chatter started because the 20D disappeared from Canon's site. The 20D has again appeared on the site.

Move along. There's nothing to see. Move along.

I agree with Jason. I'll be shocked if this is FF. Thrilled, but shocked. --c

If it's not priced around $1500, it is not a replacement for the 20D. I hope that information does not turn out to be true, 20D prices may climb instead of drop if that is the case.

Personally, I would be thrilled with a slight update - maybe improved focusing (low light) and at least the same speed as the 20D, I'm sure they will boost the pixel count to piss off nikon... Canon would replace the 20D only to increase the Gap between the entry (XT) and mid-level (20D) cameras. I would expect a 1D mark III would be in order as well...

I was just about to pull the trigger on a 20D, but I can wait. I've lived with the 300D for almost 2 years, a few more weeks won't kill me. Paying $2500 for the upgrade might.

I also agree with Jason, it just doesn't seem logical, unless this "new" camera is meant to fill a spot between the 1d mk2 and the 20D. In that case I could see it being a 1.3x camera.

Rebel line is up to 8MP. Seems reasonable to move the 20D line up to (say) 10MP at 1.6x. If Nikon can do 12MP at 1.5x, I guess Canon can do that easy.

There are other rumours of a "tweener" -- something like a 3D or 5D -- with 12+ MP and FF.

*If* anything is announced next week I hope it's on show at Brazil Photo Image which opens on Tuesday, as I plan to be there.

*If* there's anything there, I'll probably need US football padding to get near it, however

Last year very one said an 8Mp Rebel was not likley or logical as it would undermine 20D sales.

They're not going to replace the 20D with a full-frame $3000 camera. They may replace it with a 1.6X 11 mpx camera of similar price.

They may also produce a new $3000 12.5 mpx camera in full-frame. But it won't be the 20D replacement.

Good grief, why don't we just pin one of these threads and rename it "The interminable new dSLR thread"?

in my opinion canon will replace 1d2 first. if its true that its a ff 12mp then id bet my boots it does 8fps to REALLY piss nikon off. there is no sense in upgrading the 20d when it has virtually no competition out there, however as nikon released the 2dx then the 1d2 seems much more likely for upgrade. also the 1d2 is next in line, its been out the longest. saying that id much prefer to see 12mp in my price range cos i wouldnt upgrade for anything else. (i print big) i dont usually post in these topics but i thought i would since so many people are sick of seeing them. why read it when it obviously says "new eos" or something similar?

Yes, I agree that the 1D M2 will be replaced shortly as Canon Australia is already offeringa AUD $1,000 rebate and it will compete with Nikon's D2x.

But I'm not too sure of the FF sensor but then again Canon can simply utilize the FF sensor of the previous 1Ds.

My guess it will be 1.6x sensor and will price competively with the D2x.

If I had to guess, I would think it would have to leapfrog the Nikon offering... The logical thing to do would be replace the 1D II. In the normal cycle, it is ready to be replaced. Alternatively, i fthat is not ready yet, they could be doing a quick fix to specifically address the Nikon offering... They could take the 20d sensor and go from 1.6x to 1.0x and get a stepup ito 14mp+

It doesn't replace the 20D it's a new camera that sits between the 20D and the 1-series.

How is the 1DII ready to be replaced in the "normal Cycle". Didn't the first cycle take close to 3 years? By that cycle we still have another 1.5 years to go!!! Even replacing the 20D seems a little soon, it's only been a year and it seems to be on a 18 month cycle, so even that seems a bit off. I would expect the spriong to be the likely time for the 20D and summer next year earliest for the 1DII.

No, this was in response to Canon USA's $500 rebate, which was in response to a downturn in sales due to the 1Ds2 and D2X. The 1D2 is not being replaced before next year IMO. All indicators are that if a new camera is coming it's an entirely new camera and not a replacement for anything. It may well be a tweener and it may well be FF (I hope not) and it may well cost $3K. There is some merit to the story as Spanish Canon engineers something along the lines of a new model coming around October. Canon is on record as saying the 1 series will merge eventually, but given the cost of a 21MP FF sensor, I can't see this happening unless there is a fairly high end replacement 1.3x crop camera. So an EOS 5D/2D (no 3D since it is a clean design and no confusion about digital EOS 3) with 12.5MP 1.3x crop, integrated grip, 2.5" LCD, Li Ion battery, 1kg max, ISO 50-3200, spot metering, 200 zone evaluative metering, 11 pt AF, with 9 x-type sensors, joystick control of AF points and menu items, etc, priced around $2500 will do me very nicely.

There is supposedly one standout feature above all on this ruoured camera. I think it will be a true colour sensor, others have said live preview (lame IMO) and others say a high speed crop mode ala the D2X.

Following what Pixel Perfect has mentioned, I guess here down under, we get the ripple effect just like we feel the effects of the US economy.

I guess $2,500 US sounds very reasonably price (ie. under $5,000 AUD) which is cheaper than the D2x as it sells for $7,150 AUD.

Why Canon didn't just follow the film models using the 1,3 & 4 series.
EOS 1 for absolute pinacle top of the line, 3 & 5 for pro staff, EOS 30 for semi-pro, EOS 300 & EOS 3000 etc. Take care.

Price point is definitely an issue I look at the current Canon DSLR lineup with some dismay really.. In Canada the 20D is about $1800 CAD. Whereas the 1DMark II is $5200 and the 1Ds Mark II is $10000 CAD!!! The price gap between the 20D and the 1D series is enormous and I really wish that Canon will fill that gap with something that would give semi-pros and advanced amateurs some more choice.

I think that really there are many digital shooters ready for a 1.6 crop 12-14 mp camera similar to the Nikon. As well I think Canon in particular has the chance to open up the market for a less expensive CMOS full frame or 1.3 crop camera.

Currently though what makes sense for Canon to do is to introduce that EOS 3 camera with 1.3x crop and a 10-12 mp sensor. Semi-Pro general shooting camera. Re-introduce eye focus.

Then update the 1DMarkII to 1.6 crop (no I'm not crazy) 14mp sensor, 12 frames a second for the sports and PJ shooters.

Finally, update the 1DsMark II in couple years with 22mp full frame 5fps. Pro studio camera.

I'm sure I'll be wrong about this, but it is fun to speculate!

the pentium pro was a server chip. it was never really "replaced" but just eventually rendered obsolete as the Pentium II and Pentium III chips surpassed it in speed.

Start selling your 20D's at ebay before prices will go down drastically. As I have noticed the price of the new 20D's went down after canon's mail and rebate ended. Oh I'm so excited! A full frame camera, 12MP resolution, with vertical grip included. it must be like the 1D's and hope there will be no more build in flash, it is so unusefull because of its range.

Built in flash is actually a very useful thing to have. Theres been so many times when I havent had a flash in my camera bag that the 20D's flash came in handy.

For example, sometimes after shooting some sporting events, one of the teams athletic communications directors will ask if I would like to take a couple of portrait type shots of a player we migh feature in an article. I may not of brought a speedlight with me that day, just my 20D backup camera, since I wasnt expecting to shoot such shots and I of course cant bring everything I own. 20D built in flash saves the day to fill in under a ball cap or helmet.

As long as it doesnt waste space in the mirror box, flashes dont bother me at all. Better to have something built in you might not need rather that than have a single time when you miss something
