Thought I would throw up this sample of the Sigma 30mm f1.4 HSM DC lens. This image was shot with a D2x at f1.4 @1/1000 sec. I have been pretty impressed with this lens after using it on 2 jobs. Super-fast focusing, edge-to-edge shaprness, and great low light characteristics are strengths of this lens. The only tiny drawback on the lens is a slight amount of vignetting at f1.4 (not more than any other 1.4 lens!)

Looks promising.

Over on the Canon forum, they were bellyaching about sharpness, but if it holds up on a D2X, I think that is good enough

I would love to have a f/1.4 lens in this range. Been looking at the Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D lens... but in my opinion it is just not worth the cost. I'm not saying that I can't afford it... but it is just way over-priced... $1600-$1700 new is just plain ridiculous.

I'll be keeping my eye on the Sigma. I do not currently have any non-Nikkor lenses... but if the Sigma measures up to Nikkor glass... I might be interested.

Would love to see more images if you have the time.

I would like to see a few more examples as well...the bokeh looks a tad rougher than the 50 f/1.4 but acceptable nonetheless.

another advantage of the D2X. It gets to use the inexpensive, but good, digital lenses.

Well, to be fair, it's basically just a replacement for the normal lens factoring in the size of the sensor.

So it's basically that we have been giveth what has been taken away by the crop factor.

Anyone know how it compares to the Nikkor? Is it regardless of price just as good a lens?

Daniel.

I thought d2x had a full frame sensor

No. The D2X sensor is APS-C in size.

All Nikon DSLRs have full frame sensors. The DX format is smaller than the 35mm format so the angle of view it different when the same lens is used.

Canon guy here:
I thought the Nikon DSLR's did not have a full frame sensor. Hence the reason why they have a 1.5x crop factor. The only DSLR's with full frame sensors are the Canon EOS 1Ds series.

The sigma is really a very nice lens. I compared it at a local store with the canon L version ($1300) and even though it was not as nice as the canon version wide open, it holds it's own. Extremely sharp and the low light shooting and shallow DOF at 1.4 is nice when needed. The price ($449) is good too.

.

The physical size of the DX sensor is not as large as a 35mm frame just like a 35mm frame is not as large as medium format frame. So to say that the DX is not full frame would be like saying 35mm is not full frame because a medium format frame is larger. The specs on my D70 shows 3008 x 2000 pixel sensor and sure enough that's what my raw files show too - a full frame in my opinion. The physical size of a slide/negative can be measured with a ruler. There is no physical size in a digital image file - only pixels. The physical size of the sensor does have an effect on the angle of view but that's all. All square or rectangular images are cropped if you consider that the image projected by the lens is circular.

To say one sensor size is full frame while another isn't is nonsense.

I think their mainly talking about full frame as in the aspect ratio of the cropping. Nikon's crop is different than Canon cropping...

I've been considering this lens. Price seems a bit dear for what you get (why does it cost more than a full-frame 50/1.4?). Would be nice to plumb the depths of night with something wider than a 50, though...

Its FF or not in relation to a normal 35mm frame, you remember FILM dont you ?

If youv've been a film shooter before, all your lenses are going to give you a certain FOV. a 50mm is going to give you a certain head and shoulders framing from a certain distance you are used to. If you switch to a 1.5x crop sensor, from that same distance your not getting the same framing.

Thusly, in terms of the way 35mm lens are designed, cropped sensors are not full frame because they dont cover the area of 35mm film. A normal lens is projecting an image circle that is larger than the sensor area, unless your using the new DX and similar aps-c lens which are designed for smaller sensors

If you put a DX lens on a 35mm film camera, you'd only get an image in the center of your frame.

Thusly, the difference between FF and cropped sensors
