p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Textured mapping

I'm currently developing a textured brushstroke technique which will eventually lead to a realistic oil rendering (still not quite there yet, but much closer than previous attempts). What I did was create my usual watercolor rendering (see past posts) and then I did the following:

1. duplicate layer
2. set the levels of the top layer to between 150 and 255
3. used GIMP to create the flowing brushstrokes
4. created a light gray layer and set it as middle layer
5. set to top layer as darken only
6. merged the top two layers
7. set the resulting top layer as screen and adjusted its opacity to taste.
8. flattened all layers
9. duplicated the layer and set the top layer to overlay
10. adjusted the opacity of the top layer until I liked the saturation level of the image
11 flattened all layers
12. duplicated the resulting layer and used GIMP's map function to create the textured layer (inverted white)
13. adjusted this textured layer till I liked it.
14. duplicated the layer again
15. used cybia's alpha color filter to remove the dark colors
16. again used GIMP's map function on the top layer (non-inverted)
17. adjusted the opacity to taste
18. addition color tweaking to taste

The completed result can be found by clicking on the image below (hope you all like it. ):

GNU Image Manipulation Program

Saying it's like PS can sometimes start a riot, so I won't But it's quite capable (Layers, scripting, etc) and runs on several platforms.

GIMP 2.2 has just been released as well. Much more stabler (if that's a word) and a few additional improvements (along with additional filters) than GIMP 2.0.
