Had the opportunity to see some kingfishers in the snow in December. Here are a few of my favourite shots. It was an absolute thrill for me and has really made me want to try and make 2018 a year where I do a lot more wildlife photography. Hope you enjoy.

Cheers

Beautiful birds, beautifully captured.

We get kingfishers in the area around where I live but have caught little more than glimpses of them.

Just fantastic and I understand your excitement. Care to add a little background on the capture and gear?

A great set of photographs. I have only seen kingfishers a few times, it's always a great thrill.

Well, I've never seen a KF in snow before so your post is a real treat!

Happy new year,

We spent a couple of hours driving north into the midlands where there was heavy snow (for the UK at least). We hunkered down for a few hours in a very cold hide and waited to see if any kingfishers would turn up and we got quite a show with multiple visits.

For these shots I was using a Nikon D850 with the 500mm f4 FL all mounted on a wimberly mk2 / gitzo combo. There wasn't a lot of light so I was frequently switching between high ISO action-ready settings and then dropping down to burst at really low shutter speeds. The most detailed shot above (number 3) was at f8, 1/100th and ISO 200.

I've settled into having a couple of custom banks set up for exactly that purpose. When I get set up in a hide I set bank C or slow shutter speed portraits and D for fast action and high-ISO (often using auto-ISO). That way I can very quickly switch over and get the benefits of low ISO and then be ready for action. That's the theory anyway. I got a lot of relatively static poses that I liked but only a couple of action shots. My reactions can't stand up to a kingfisher taking off.

Thanks,

Phil
