p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Moon rising over Mount Baker

Thanks to the Photographer’s Ephemeris (for telling where to go), and Mother Nature (for parting the clouds), I was finally able to get some images that I have wanted for several years now. Instead of waiting for the “official” super moon tonight, I took these images one day early for several reasons. First, by shooting a day earlier, the moon rises earlier in the day, which allows a better exposure that will show both detail in the moon and detail in the terrestrial landscape. Second, the size of the moon won’t appear much larger tonight than it did last night! Finally, hey, you don’t pass up a nice weather day in the rainy season in western Washington. These images were taken on New Year’s Eve, from Cap Sante, near Anacortes. I used the Nikon D850 camera and the Nikkor 300mm f/4 PF lens. As a final note, I did a bit of editing on the dark ridge at the bottom of both images (to remove evidence of some logging roads and a couple clear cut areas).

Keith,
Both of these are outstanding if i had to choose #1 would be it. I like the way the comp stacks up.

Dean

Dean, thanks! I prefer the first image also. My wife prefers the second image, however!

Very nice Keith. I wish the clouds and sea smoke had cleared for me.

Mike, thanks! Yes, I lucked out big time. After all, it is our rainy season.

Btw, here is something very close to full frame (only a bit of the sides have been cropped to give this aspect ratio). This is what I originally had in mind, but with the great ability to crop D850 images, I had several options. Eventually, I decided that I liked the first two images better than the fuller image below (which has too much going on, in my opinion). Others may see things differently, so I thought I would add this third image.
