Finally got my 1dx II and canon 100-400 IS II combo this Christmas.
Both images were adjusted on level exposure only.
If you don't mind, post your images.
Thank you.

Judging on my iPhone, the ground is too hot in the cougar image...so I donít think you are done with the not so expensive editing software.

I'm not sure if anyone use IPhone to edit any photos.
I just think that new camera equipments nowadays requires very minimal on editing side.
Thanks Chez.

What he's saying is that he looked at your photos on his iphone, and he felt that the background in the first photo was a little too bright. I'd say the photo's overall exposure is little too bright, but it might just be my monitor. Great photo, though! Both are excellent photos.

I think the ground on the first shot is a little bright as well but easily corrected.

I have to say I find the thread title somewhat amusing. $6000+ worth of gear (if refurb) to take photos but concerned about not needing $50-100 worth of software. $10/month for the best Adobe has.

Reminds me of people buying 3rd party batteries on the cheap to put in a $6000 body.

Congrats on the new rig, but it does look like your levels adjustment did take things a bit brighter (245-ish) on the ground (245 - 255 is specular highlight range).

That's not to say you need expensive software to adjust for that, as you likely adjusted it just a tad farther (to taste) than you might have. Might check your monitor brightness, if you adjusted by eye (vs. by numbers). Might check your WB, too ... looks a tad cyanic in the white fur.

Again, congrats on the rig ... enthusiasm, duly noted.

You should also consider adding cropping into your feature list. This thing in the top left corner of the flamingo photo, looking like a pink ass, needs to be cropped out.

nah, leave the pink ass for conversations sake. lol

exposure doesn't look hot on my monitor. i cant see a color shift either, colors are very balanced in the RGB with just a tad more in the blue channel. .

Lol.. pink ass stays.
Exactly what Iím trying to say is that you donít need expensive Photoshop to edit these photos.
These are basically straight out from camera except I did one for the level adjustment.
Thank you all.

I'm fully open to be corrected on my viewpoint, but even the best DSLR sensors have very real limitations on their dynamic range. All Raw files from even a 1DXII or Nikon D5 can benefit from pushing/pulling the highlights & shadows.

I would love the opportunity to have the Raw files of your two images, and show you what I would do using CS6. PM me if you like; I have a DropBox account.

When you write "post your images", are you referring to our edit of one your one of your two first images, or a photo we ourselves have taken?

I ask because I think both versions of your cat pic are too flat (for my taste, at least), and the best way to show what I mean is to post an edit I've done. However they're your photos and maybe that's not cool with you, or with the social etiquette here on FM! I have no idea.

ngaio:
- Post your unedited images with this combo and you can post edited one with the same image. This new technology is giving us Photographer a lot easier to manage PP without using expensive softwares. This definitely benefits the Wedding Photographers where they shoot hundreds if not thousands of images... I can't imagine how much time they would spend on Post Processing.
Thank you.

If you're fretting about spending bucks on editing software, why not use the free ones? Canon's DPP is sort of a LR wannabe and is free. If you need more editing power, Darktable is nipping at the heels of LR for the price of a couple clicks.

I own merely a humble 1D X, not the Mark II. So my images are not going to illustrate your argument. However, to cut to the chase: your argument is correct if and only if (1) you like flat images, or (2) you use off camera flash a lot and you can take the time to get the light just right in camera. Maybe that's your thing, and that's fine. I have no problem with that and I doubt anyone else does either. It's not my thing and I'd never settle for it myself. For many but not all of my images I like adjusting the micro, low, medium, and high contrast separately from each other. I like being able to work on the details separately from the rest of the image. Together these steps can make a huge -- and to my eyes -- a most pleasing difference.

All i'm saying is little PP is necessary from these new cameras nowadays.
Unedited images are already sharp and great looking....you just add a bit of sat., contrast or however you like on your editing.... Spending less time on Post Processing.

What a tough audience your playing to, Reed.

Enjoy your new gear. I'll just sit back and enjoy the "wow" factor with you! I've been there, too.
