For those that shoot casual travel pics in nyc, what would be your pick?

35mm (Fuji X100F) and 40mm (Canon's pancake) suit me very well here and are my most-used lenses and thus focal lengths.

Interesting, i thought something really wide would be the recommendation. Id like to see samples if possible.

Well, what are you going to shoot? There is a case for something wide if you want primarily architecture. Do you want street photography? Nature in Central Park? Portraits? I know myself I could not do NYC without several focal lengths, but each person has their own goals.

I'm not much of a street shooter, but I was in NYC recently for business and only carried my UWA zoom because I hate lens changes outside. So my choice would be the 10-24 and maybe something faster if you want to shoot people. Here's what I captured:

I love these questions. There is NO ANSWER. Take what you have and use it. You can make a good image in NYC or any city with any focal length if you know how to. Only YOU know your shooting preferences and styles.

Yup, 10-24 spends the most time on my camera when I travel.

Love all of those! I don't have the zoom but I do have the 16mm and like you I just want to take one lens for simplicity and to avoid changing lenses, that's what prompted the question. I may put a fisheye in my pocket though.

My wife and I visited NYC in May. I took the 14mm and 23mm f2. Perfect for most needs - compact, lightweight, and relatively fast.

Very nice series of images Chris. The 10-24 is definitely an excellent choice.

Context is importantóthere are lots of ways to do photography there.

Iím leaving for New York tomorrow, and Iíll be there for a week. I mostly do street photography including handheld night photography.

I use a XPro2. For daytime photography I will mostly use 14mm, 27mm, and 60mm. At night I switch to f/1.4 versions of 23mm and 35mm lenses.

If I were using a zoom it would be something like the 16-55mm.

Steve, since you think that not changing lenses is more important than having the right lens for the given scene, I'd suggest using the 16-55 and leaving it on. It is the most versatile for all around walk around and offers the best on the spot framing possibilities.

I use my 18-55 for just walking around with. Swapping lenses is tough in this fast moving place. I have shot lots of architectural and street scenes with this one lens.

BTW I'm talking 35mm (full frame) equivalents here. So that would mean roughly 23mm in Fuji's line-up.

A wide angle zoom would be nice too but I personally find wide-angle shots to get boring rather quickly. I always wind up shooting wide-angle zooms mostly at the tele end.

To sum up, like someone else said above: it's all about personal preference.

23mm f2 is what i use ..i think it's the perfect compromise all around if i only want to carry one lens on a night day out in the city

Really? A specific focal length is boring to you? Never heard that one before. Are you talking about your own images only? Maybe when you advance as a photographer you will make better images at every focal length and then you won't have to avoid your boring wide angle. You might even get to like it.

Thanks! Just spent a lot of time moving between destinations with a camera in my backpack. NYC is an awesome place to shoot, my next visit will be more photo specific.

this, what are you trying to shoot in NYC? that will tell you what focal length to bringand not a random stranger in the internet.
my go to travel kit lens usually consist of 3 lenses, UWA, wide and med-tele with the wide or med-tele being the primary use.

flying tomorrow to Asia for 3 weeks and I'm bringing only 3 lenses with me, 21mm, 35mm and 55mm on FF.

past couple of times I've been to NYC, I used mostly a 28mm or 35mm (FF equiv)
