At center they are very similar. They are both optimal from 16-21mm but the GM shows less astigmatism towards the corners. Side by side, I thought the GM has slightly higher contrast especially in backlit scenes. I sold my 16-35/4 ZA and regret it.
Fred, I am considering upgrading my 16-35 from to the GM. As such I'm wondering why you regret selling your friend?
I use my for both landscape and street photography (it's my only lens wider than my 55mm) as I would appreciate the extra light and more bokeh along with any contrast or sharpness gains. But I feel that the GM might be a bit big, though it's plastic contrast might be a bit less scratch prone than the frame.
