p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 24-70 f/2.8 later version(s) - reality check b4 buying

Ive been away, and not current on newer Canon lenses. I currently have 28-70 f/2.8 non-IS and it has been my workhorse but after years of service, is broken and I'm going to retire it. Wondering about the 24-70mm f/2.8 and how many generations there are out there -- and if so, how they differ, Is there any improvement in terms of corner sharpness. I shoot landscapes and aerials. Tripod on the ground, hand held in the air. Let me know if you have real-world experience comparing any generations of this venerable lens.
Wishing you great light! Paul

There are two generation. Neither have IS. The mkII is smaller and lighter and more closely resembles the 24-105 f/4 IS with the lens extending at 70mm and the hood attached to the moving part of the barrel. I own a mkII but have only rented and borrowed a mkI. The mkII is definitely the better and sharper of the two.

The Canon 2.8 MII is very sharp.
If you need IS or can get by with f/4, I'd look for something else.

+1

If you don't need f/2.8 (for higher shutter speed or subject separation), then get the EF 24-70/4L IS. The 24-70/2.8 L II has better edges and corners than the 24-70/2.8 L, but the 24-70/4L IS is another step better (at f/8 and infinity focus). I've owned all of these lenses.

I never owned the earlier 24-70 lens(s), but I'm a photojournalist who owned a whole range of earlier Canon lenses. In the last 3-4 years I've upgraded them all to the more recent versions and can firmly say there is a startling improvement in contrast, sharpness (especially the edges) and most particularly resistance to flare. The 24-70 f/2.8L II is a prime example of these improvements and a true pro's workhorse of a lens. Yeah, I wish it had IS and there is vignetting until you hit about f/4.5, but that is instantly removed in post processing.

While I don't own it, the newest 24-105 is the only new lens version that appears to have missed the mark.

Stars in the corners tend to stress a lens wide open.
Here is the 24-70mm II at 24mm f/2.8 from a few years back.

The newest version of the 24-70mm f/2.8L is among my main lenses. I use it for landscape photography and other purposes, and it is a fine performer. Corner sharpness is fine, too. The newest lens uses a different design than earlier versions.

On the other hand, for your particular use the f/4 24-70mm lens might also be just fine. I'm guessing that you probably don't use f/2.8 much for those subjects.

Don't forget that Tamron and Sigma are both making stabilized 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses; in fact the Tamron is already on its second version (even though the update was more to incorporate the compatibility with the tuning dock and to improve the stabilization; the optics are reported to be nigh identical).

I rented the original Tamron and found it nice and sharp. Some complained about AF, but I didn't notice it. For night shots, there's a fair amount of coma. Hence I went with the Canon 24-70 2.8 M2

The 24-70 f2.8L still holds it own*. Naturally it has fallen out of favour since the advent of the Mark II and the f4L IS.

*That being said, in all seriousness, it really is best suited to knockabout reportage and is a bargain for such when you find one for a fair price.

Canon 24-70 f2.8II is exceptionally good. No real need for primes: first time I have ever felt this for this focal length range. The earlier version did not quite hit the spot for a genuine all-rounder. Good for events, less good for landscapes. Also it was too big. I would also check out the Tamron 24-70 G2. There are the f4 Canon zooms too, but I have not tried them.

The 24-70mm f/2.8 II is exceptionally good! Someone mentioned the lack of need for primes when using this lens and I agree. My 24mm f/1.4 II has hardly seen the light of day since I bought the zoom. Only when I need the fast aperture does it leave my bag. Lens technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 years.

I absolutely love my 24-70 f2.8 L II lens. Extremely sharp. I'm looking at a 5-foot pano on my office wall that I used that lens for and I could go another 5 feet wide it would be plenty sharp. I use the lens a lot. Love it.

Yest another big fan of the 24-70 f2.8 II. Really fine corner to corner sharpness. I shoot with this lens maybe 70% of the time...

Only the extra weight has me curious about jcowell's enthusiasm for the f4 IS...
