This was my forth time out this season looking for the snowy owls and I'd had no luck so far. The adventure begins by braving New York City rush hour traffic as I head to the Long Island South Shore beach where the owls winter. I meet my friend Eric in the parking lot and we decide to take a trail that heads directly into the wind which was gusting to 40 MPH on this cool November day. We made the choice as when we reach the water we would have the wind to our side and later to our backs. As we hiked across the sand dunes we saw another group of photographers Including Wane from FM) that were taking the same route as we did. They had spread out as we had and one of them spotted an owl and were kind enough to wave to us. We joined them setting up about 100 feet from the owl that was on a slight rise in a valley.

-2 After about an hour of watching us photograph it the owl launched and landed on the top of this dune. This photo is of the landing.

-3 The hill provided a very pretty environment for our photos and allowed us to move into a valley and out of the wind

-7 Eventually the owl blasted off from the top of the dune and headed far off onto the beach. After a long walk we found it on the beach on a small rise and using some grass as camofladge

-8 We shot from many different angles. I was quite far back and added my TC for this image. I had to manual focus because of the grass

-9 Five photographers were on the beach and we all took this one creating quite a racket

-11 As the owl takes to the air you can see that each wing is as long as it's body
