Is there a reason to make the 58mm cost three times, yes x3 of 50mm?

Build quality, physical size (it weighs 100g more), F1.4 (depending what 50mm you're comparing it to), an extra lens element, and the very unique rendering and bokeh quality. It's also probably a very low volume lens which requires a higher price to make sense for Nikon.

It's a special lens but not for everyone. If you are a sharpness freak it's also not for you. It costs 7.5X as much as the 1.8G

This!

Have a look in the special thread for the lens.
If you don't see it, the lens is not for you.

Nikon AF‑S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens,Full Frame Lenses, Prime $446.00

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G Lens $1596.00 on B&H

The only difference is 8mm.
I read the reviews. From what I see, the image quality is very much then same for both lenses.

Actually if you look at the reviews in FM here, the 50mm gets 9 and the 58mm get 8.

There is a lot more different than 8mm though. Size, weight, number of elements, bokeh, rendering style, etc. It is a unique lens designed for a niche market. I'm guessing reviews are less favorable because when most people buy a lens, their first criteria is sharpness, and the 58mm gives up sharpness but excels in other areas instead which are important to a much smaller crowd. The 58mm also has a T stop of 1.7 where the 50mm has a T-stop of 2.1, so light transmission is quite a bit better on the 58mm.

I'm not a fan of it either but I understand why people like it. I don't use the 50mm range hardly at all so I have a 50/1.8G that I rarely use.

Chris already mentioned it above, but if you're curious, head over to the 58mm thread and if the photos don't stand out to you in a way you like, you just saved $1000

If you're after sharpness, the 50/1.8G and Sigma 50/1.4A are your best bets.

What I have difficulty understanding is the relative lack of sharpness of the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 which is not as sharp as the Nikon 58mm lens which is itself not as sharp as the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens. With either a DX or FX camera I would probably go with the sharper Sigma lens.

Lens Rentals has a good write-up comparing the two that might be a useful read for anyone in the market:

Dpreview review:
"Compared to AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G

The big question facing potential buyers of the 58mm f/1.4G is how it compares to the much-cheaper 50mm f/1.4G, which on the face of it has a very similar specification, but is much smaller and cheaper. This decision isn't helped by the fact that, if you compare the studio test data of the lenses side-by-side, the 50mm appears to be ahead in some respects - most notably edge sharpness.

The 50/1.4G is a bit of an oddball. It's a fine lens, but it trades blows from a sharpness perspective with the much cheaper 50/1.8G, depending what ranges you test it in. It also has worse distortion than the cheaper 1.8G. The 58mm was never designed for sharpness, but the 50/1.4G doesn't have the same excuse. The Sigma 50/1.4A is the sharpest 50mm without going MF into Zeiss territory.

They're all decent lenses, you just have to narrow down what's most important to you. I just find 50mm to be an odd range, I am always either a lot wider or at 85mm or longer. For a cheap lens to mess around with though you can't go wrong with one of the less expensive 50's.

The 58G is a specialty lens with a spectrum of renderings. In the present offering of 50mm lenses it is surprisingly small and light and makes for a great travel/street lens. Personally I love the 58G as I have had the Leica M 50 Nocti f/1.0 which also was one of my all time favorites.

The 50 Art is also a superb lens and I keep both the 58G and 50 Art in my bag. We have many choices and we just need to decide which we prefer

Actually there is nothing special about the 58mm. It is not as sharp as the 50mm.

Are you planning in buying one or the other? Their different lenses, but unless your a PRO needing that particular look of the 58mm, I would highly recommend the 50mm 1.8G. The 1.8G is amazing for the money and can't make you great memories.

Good luck and happy shooting

I have the 58G, 50/1.4G, 50/1.8G, 50 Art and Leica R 50 Cron 1983. All excellent in their own right.

Sorry I have to disagree regarding the comparisons. The 58G stopped down marginally to f/2 to f/5.6 is probably one of the sharpest pseudo 50's out there. At f/1.4 is has a beautiful glow and is its signature for portraits and differentiates from many of modern 50's out there, and yet stopped down it is one of the sharpest 50's.

If you have tested the 58G and it is does not suit do move to the other options. This is a specialty lens and it may not suit Good luck in your search.

I keep hearing " specialty lens " about the 58mm from the owners of this lens. What does that mean? I trust the review of Dpreview and from what I read, it is nothing "special" about this lens compared with 50mm?. So what is " specialty" about this lens?

Yoda said, "Do or do not, there is no try."
I had both, 50mm 1.4 was sold long time ago.
Most clients will see no or very little difference....
But this is my tool, and it helps me to do more and do it better, that's it...
If I decided it is worth the difference, than it does... for me...
And it is very sharp from f/2, with beautiful bokeh

Specifications and lens tests are useful starting points but rarely tell the whole story. They are certainly helpful to weed out bad lenses or ones with undesirable characteristics though. Personally I prefer the 50 1.8g to the 1.4 but I can well understand that others may prefer the 1.4. I don’t usually find the soft veiling flare you may get with the 50 1.4g wide open very useful, but I can see that for some styles of shooting it might be. In other words it can be a bug or a feature. I have no experience with the 58 but have no doubt similar considerstions apply - if you like the look it is worth it but it may not offer benefits that you value. If Robert Parker rates a wine a 92 or a 93 I have little doubt it will be an interesting wine to taste but it doesn’t mean I will prefer it to one he rates at 90 points.

I am like you. What counts is what I see.
So what do you see in 58mm that made your decision 58mmis better than 50mm?
