p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A couple from Laguna

The tide levels in SoCal have been jumping around lately. Here are two shots taken over the past few days - the first when the tides were about +5 ft - which allowed for more wave action, and the second during a tide of -1ft - which exposed some pretty interesting stuff. Both sunset shots - and from areas not too far from each other.

Thanks for taking a look. CC are always welcome

Todd

UPDATE - Given feedback regarding the second image - and after giving it another look - I did revise it. Pulled back some of the black point - and toned down some of the blue and green saturation points.

Dale - I used an ultra-wide angle for the shot (12mm) - which means a few things....

1. The rock in the foreground was actually pretty small
2. The rock being hit by the wave was actually pretty big
3. The wave was bigger.
4. And - to answer your question - yes, I got very wet.

That backlight on the splash and the grass covered rock are awesome!

Very nice timing on both images, the first would be my pick. The second seems to have a lot of blue in the water.

Loving that motion on the first. The second is pure eye-candy. Congrats on a great series.

Damn, the first one is one hell of a shot. Well done with capturing the PERFECT moment, while also doing justice to the composition and the post-processing. Great job!

What was the focal length you were shooting on? 11mm?

For the second one, may be its just me, but it's looking kind of overdone. The blue in the water and the blacks in the overall image seem to be very pronounced, which seems to be giving it that unnatural look. You might want to do something about it.

Thanks to both of you for pointing out the "overdone" nature of the processing. After looking at it again - I tend to agree - and have revised. Thanks again - I value the input.

It was shot with the Sigma 12-24 - set at 12mm.

The 2nd pic was taken at f/11 but there's no sun stars. I normally get sun stars shooting at f/10 or smaller but I'm a crop sensor shooter. Do we have to stop down more to get star effect with a full frame camera?

Not really - what you need is a clear view of the sun. In this image the sun was obscured by a thin cloud layer - which in my experience - kills the "star".

Nicely done! Love the dynamics you captured here. Especially like dramatic sky in #2.

Diggin' the second shot ... it's a natural ROYGBIV (that isn't a rainbow).

Beautiful images. The timing on both showing the motion and power of the water is excellent.
