I'm looking to upgrade from my 24-120 for my D850 and am looking for the best option out there.

The Tokina has gotten very favorable reviews, often the top pick optically even when not considering budget.

Has anyone used this lens with the D810/D850?

Mark

The best : Nikon 24-70 VR

Good: Tamron 24-70 G2 / Sigma 24-70 Art

Thanks for your feedback - what is your source for this ranking, as it is the opposite of what tests I've seen:

From your review linked:"At the maximum f/2.8 aperture setting, it isn’t quite as sharp as the Nikon and Tamron competition"

Below is the full quote
"Tested on the D800E, it’s razor-sharp between f/4 and f/11, achieving around 80% acutance at almost all focal lengths for these apertures, except at 70mm f/4, where some edge softness creeps in. The Nikon and Tamron equivalents certainly aren’t bad at these settings either, but they are not quite as sharp as the Tokina overall and a little more inconsistent across the frame at some settings. Overall resolution is down at the minimum f/22 aperture on all three lenses (as you’d expect due to diffraction), but again, the Tokina version delivers slightly sharper results. At f/2.8 however — a crucial aperture on a lens of this type — the Tokina isn’t as strong as the competition"

If you intend to use it at 2.8 than NIkon seems better option if not then go ahead with Tokina. Also check samples on Flickr etc. I use Nikon non VR on D810 and it is not only sharp but also has rendering that i like. I also own Sigma 50 Art and while it is very sharp the rendering is very boring / sterile. Never used Tamron nor Tokina but from samples on internet they don't seem to render as good as Nikon. Dis / liking of lens rendering is very subjective though.

The 24-120 is IMO just a decent performer on the D850, it is very versatile with the range covered, but lacks a bit of sharpness and an extra stop would be great to have

i sold my 24-70G after about 3 months with the 24-120. that extra stop is costly in the versatility department.

I had the 24-70/2.8 which I sold about 5 years ago for the 24-120

But while I do like the 24-120, I am looking for alternatives that are superior optically

I'm tempted to try the Tokina due to the Black Friday price of $650..... I'm generally a Nikon snob though.

I just picked up a 24-70E (and it's the second copy I've tried after Nikon send me a bad loaner copy). However, the older non vr version is simply sharper. Not sure if I will return the VR version or not.

And the only thing that really turns me off is the way they make the barrel extend. Just a matter of time before that gets hit and probably gets decentered. With both of the Nikon versions, the extending barrel is protected by the hoods.

The Tokina (never used it, just noticed this in a photo) zoom twist is backwards to Nikon. This is all I'd need to steer me clear of that lens.

My Sigma 24-105 Art is as sharp as my Nikon 24-70 (non VR), if not sharper, but offer better coverage. If you don't shoot a lot at 2.8, that may be a lens for you...

Ditto my Siggy 24-105. It replaced my 24-120 long ago.

I've been choosing lenses (and apertures) for reasons other than sharpness, maybe more lately than before. So I'd be hesitant to switch lenses for a bit more sharpness if the lens is working for you and getting great photos.

70 vs. 120 is noticable, too.
