Here is one of my first shots with this lens. All I did with this is adjust the brightness and contrast. that's it. Show us what you have : ) I added a couple extra to Demo the IS capability.
Here is a couple of sample IS on IS Off test shots. Both shot HH at ISO 50,@ f/1.4
I have pretty unsteady hands which is part of the reason I got this lens. These are the Canon "Faithful" profile shots straight out of the camera. All the develop settings in LR set to O. (no sharpening, contrast, or noise adjustments were made at all) I did boost the exposure only in LR. The sharper of the two is shot with ISO/ON. It's an odd shaped glass marble on a shiny black marble counter top with small pumpkin about 8" behind the marble. Just for fun is an edited photo shot with IS On 1/800 F/7.1 with this same lens while swimming in the ocean.

Great shot, the lens looks like a keeper. Does anyone have a shot of both the 1.2 and 1.4 side by side to show the size difference?

@Scobols: was that picture hand-held? Curious how good the IS really is.

The true goal of a portrait is to reveal the light within a person. You have.

I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this thread. I have an itch for a nice portrait lens and these image aren't helping me.

Both of the shots posted look fantastic!

Yes, hand held. I've been really impressed so far with the IS.

Isn't the speed 1/1000 on the first image? Not be negative, but that kind of shutter time isn't a demo of IS function, if so. Perhaps I misunderstand the context of the discussion.

Your first portrait is very nice, but does illustrate the unforgiving nature of 1.4 at this kind of subject distance, meaning the lady's left eye look tack sharp; the right eye less so. I make the remark having myself made plenty of OOF eyes with the 1.2 lens.

Grateful to have samples of the new 85.

Perhaps the IS point was made regarding the handheld still life at 1/25th. That makes sense as an IS discussion point. I'd never try to hand hold the 85/1.2 at 1/25th.

The subject was approximately 42 inches away. With a DOF (according to DOF Calculator) of just .48 of an inch. So I would expect the eye farthest away from the eye I focused on to be a little soft. No fault of the lens. You are right this was not to demonstrate IS of this lens. The two images I added of the glass marble demonstrate IS capability of this lens Hand Held at slow shutter speed. The last image I added was just for fun (fast shutter speed while swimming in the ocean with IS enabled) Whether or not that helped I'm not sure but having done this many times at that focal length and shutter speed I think it certainly did. Thanks for your comments John

A fine choice of subject to demonstrate the virtues of the 85 f/1.4 IS as a portrait lens. The personality and the warmth come through beautifully.

Can't reveal or I'll be banned. Looks are deceiving. this wave is closing out as most do at this break but the water clarity and color are exquisite. The water here is clear most of the time. One of the most beautiful beaches in the world as far as I'm concerned.

I have another session tomorrow as well as 3 more over the next few weeks. So I look forward to getting more great stuff with this lens. It's a beaut! I sold my Art to fund this purchase and I'm very happy with the performance up to this point. ESPECIALLY with autofocus. Thank sweet baby Jesus for Canon's first party ring-type USM autofocus.

All images shot wide open in this to show maximum bokeh effect.

1. This little nut was moving around quickly and the AF nails the close eye perfectly.
1DX Mark II | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/1250 | f/1.4 | ISO 320

2. I'm loving the bokeh character of the lens.
1DX Mark II | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/1250 | f/1.4 | ISO 125

3. This was a particularly busy background to render and it did so quite impressively, IMO. This would have been hard for any lens with the grass, mulch, trees, and lighting.
1DX Mark II | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/1250 | f/1.4 | ISO 100

4. Really nice fall off.
1DX Mark II | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/2500 | f/1.4 | ISO 100

5. I notice the green fringe in the treeline, but didn't bother removing it for posting lens quality.
5D Mark IV | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/500 | f/1.4 | ISO 100 | HSS STROBE

6. As the sun came through the trees I wanted to test this lens's flare profile...WOW. Beautiful and something to work into artistic shots.
5D Mark IV | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/500 | f/1.4 | ISO 100 | HSS STROBE

7. Can bokeh get better than this? Really...this is a truly a magnificent rendering.
5D Mark IV | EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM | 1/320 | f/1.4 | ISO 100 | HSS STROBE
