Thanks for sharing your first impressions, Lance!

I have a D850 on order (I was living under a rock, so I'm late to the party), and figure I'll give it a go without the grip for a while (I've never tried one before). I generally manage my battery life pretty well with a few extra batteries in my bag, so the big advantage to me for a grip would be upping that frame rate for wildlife and motorsports shooting (and maybe the ergonomics?). If I did this professionally I might care more about the incremental fps gain, but it's already

Thank you very much for your kind comment, Chris. Much appreciated!

Having used it now for a second day shooting birds and other things, I like the grip even more. So well balanced with the Nikon lenses!

Update on battery life.

So far, I have taken 1400 photos and have 64% charge left. That means that you should be able to get about 3,800 from a full charge if drained to nearly zero.

Lance how is the quality of the grip itself. A few people have reported a bit of wiggle. Hopefully early production pains as little things like that drive me nuts (ocd)

Solid and absolutely no wobble. All very reassuring.

I will actually end up picking a system tomorrow (not trying to start anything here) and its funny the small things that matter to us. I shoot fashion and architecture and thus AF, long lenses, tilt screen (always tether) and DR mean nothing to me. Resolution is great in either system so its down to a few unique lenses, color science and ergonomics.

I had the Nikon grip down as a negative but I guess ill try one in store tomorrow.

Thats right America, my local has both D850s and the grip in stock.

Used the D850 with the grip, with Nikon 500mm FL, 300mm PF and Nikon 70-200mm f2.8E FL (with and without TC1.4III and TC1.7II). Really happy with the performance of the camera, it’s AF and the ability to crop the images. I also had the D5 with me, which felt ‘faster’, but the gripped D850 was awesome.

AF speed on the 300mm PF and the 70-200mm FL was very fast even with TC1.7II - it really gives me a lightweight 500mm f6.8 option if I need it in good light while on vacation. Some samples are attached.
