Suggestions on which brand to buy? Or just go with a body plate?

I use a RRS BD500-L L-Plate. You can detach the "L-side" of the plate and it's just a body plate.
It's not cheap, but neither is my D500. I'm very happy with the quality.
It has a hex-key integrated in the L-plate as well (magnetic).

I use a plain plate on my gripped D500. Mainly because at the time, a gripped L-plate was hard to come by. I do have a no-grip L-plate but it goes unused. My plate that I do have doubles as a hand strap and sling mount, so that's nice.

Who makes your hand grip?

The grip is the MB-D17 from Nikon. In case you were referring to the strap, it's some cheap no-name crap off amazon like this but a little different:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010WMJ9TI/ref=psdc_3345831_t2_B00MNUBDGK

I removed the built in mount from that, and attached the strap to the arca plate instead.

I replaced the screw on the arca plate with one that has a sturdy metal loop, this allows me to clip and unclip my single point camera strap sling type deal.

I'm a big spender :-}

$12.42 for the COSCOD-Universal-Quick-Release-Plate-L-Bracket-for-Benro-Arca-Swiss-Markins
It's made of aluminum so light and solid. You may have to remove it to change the battery or card. Does not matter to me as both last and last.

I got mine at Amazon and it's not there any more. I found it on eBay:

You could do what I did.
Buy the bottom Really Right Stuff BD500 base plate now for $60, then add the side L component later if you find you actually need it. I may never shoot portrait on a tripod with the D500, so I didn't go for the whole thing yet...

And it has an integrated QD attachment for straps / slings - the only QD system I trust.
