Morris, I do consider the placement in my composition. I usually look at the rule of thirds for the eyes as a guideline.

First one Stephen has pleasing colors and detail.
The second shows nice tonal graduations on the feathering colors.

As far as comp on #1, and this is merely to suggest you take a 2nd look at it, has a lot of dead space on the left. The subject is centered (a bit too centered IMO) and is looking to the right.
As a suggestion, move subject to the left and slightly up, minimize the intrusion of upper branch and see what 'you' think Use the 'eyes' of the bird for a guide in composition...............


Nice presentation overall.
