p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Stemonitopsis typhina a Rare Slime Mould 2: Dark Phase

The images in this set illustrate how this species got its name. Typha is a genus of monocotyledonous plants, found in association with fresh water, their common names including: Bulrush, Cattail and Reed Mace. The specific epithet typhoides means looks like Typha and Typhina means small Typha. So, nothing to do with typhoid!

When a species is reassigned to a genus other than its original one the specific epithet will have to agree in gender with that of the new genus but remain otherwise unchanged. This rule seems not to have been followed for this species as Comatricha typhoides. The earlier form should take precedence. The original description dates, in Stemonitis, (from Species Fungorum) are:

Stemonitis typhina F.H. Wigg. (1780) and Stemonitis typhoides (Bull.) DC. (1805), such that typhina is correct.

These images show the black stage, into which the whitish ones* changed after a few hours (the first image four and a half hours after the white stage was first photographed and the remainder about an hour later).

The pinkish object OOF in the first image, and clearly visible in others, is an Arcyria, another genus of slime mould.

The stereos are crosseyed. I think the effect in the second one is quite spectacular.

Olympus EM-1 in aperture priority mode, Olympus 4/3 x2TC & Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro at f13 1/100 sec (first image) and at f14 (no TC), TTL triple flash for the last two. The closeups were with the reversed Schneider HM 40 at f16 on a Kiron x1.5 TC, TTL triple flash. All were hand-held with support.
