Indeed as johnctharp states above, coincidentally (or by design?) the 105mm f/1.4 has exactly the same entrance pupil diameter as the Sigma/Zony 135mm f/1.8

From this we may conclude that:

  1. When used at the same subject distance both will produce equivalent images but the 105mm image will have wider FOV. If you crop the 105mm image to match the 135 DOF and background blur should be the same.

  2. When used at the same magnification (changing subject distance to account for different focal length) distant lights will yield the same size discs in the image (but close objects will be blurred more).

Of course this doesn't take into account differences in bokeh quality, or the fact the focal length (therefore entrance pupil diameter) numbers are quoted for infinity focus and often rounded (optimistically).

I use my Nikkor 105mm f1.4 with the Commlite Pro adapter. I get decent AF and also Eye-AF. It worked wonderfully on the two engagement sessions that I had last Friday and Saturday. And I will use work wedding stuff too. Never had an issue with lockups or hunting. I've also testes it in the dark in my house. I was able to AF in equivalent light to ISO 4000 at 1.4 and 1/100. Pretty good I think.

I also own the Canon mount Sigma Art 135mm f1.8 and this lens is a step above in sharpness. It also just has this look or pop to it. It's the best portrait lens I've ever used (the 105mm that is).

Hopefully it's AF performance on the coming A7RIII will be as good as my A9.

The Nikkor 105 F1.4 and Vello balance well on with gripped A9. I had considered a longer, after market 82mm screw in filter though.

if you're going strictly by MTF, the rokinon 135, sigma 135, zeiss 135 have it beat, based on LR MTF.

does it mean, one is better than the other..... no. For travel, I'de much rather use the 105, event shooting, I'de much rather use the 135. I'de say that absolute sharpness, even with the 85GM, the lowest of the bunch, is well enough for portraits.

Bokeh, flare control, AF abilities, focal length, and handling should be bigger priorities. I'm not a big fan of the swirly nature of bokeh I'm seeing from this lens, like the GM's lack of cateyes. The subtle difference in FL can be jarring for some, personally, I LOVED the nikon 105 f2.5, and that distance felt just right for me, so a lens like this could work very well for me. That said, shooting in a large church or hall, the 135 slaughters, and 200 f2 even better if you're willing to deal with the weight, and may run into areas where it's too tight.

Not going strictly by MTF, but it is a leading indicator ... and all the other characteristics are typically subjective. The reason I love this lens along with my 200mm 2.0VRII is for its drawing style. The 105 is a special lens and it and my 200mm are two of my hesitations in jumping fully (again) to Sony.

From personal experience, if you skip the Nikon 28mm 1.4E and Nikon 200mm 2.0VRII you're missing out!... Oh yeah, the 70-200 2.8E is pretty awesome too!

I kind of have my eye on that 28mm 1.4E. It would be a good replacement for my Batis 25.

I haven't had time to keep up with photography the past several years.

I still have a Nikon D800 in the closet somewhere but now mostly use the Sony a7 with 55 f/1.8 to take occasional pictures of the kids.

I'd like to do a little more portraiture of my family. Any lens that has the picture quality of the Nikon 200 f/2 for the Sony system?

Dammit, why donít someone make a quality Nikon to E mount adapter that can AF as good as the Canon adapters?

That Nikon 70-200 f/2.8E FL looks damn nice too, just saying....

I owned the Zeiss 135 APO and Nikon 105 1.4 on a D810/750 - there is simply no comparison. Amazing lens. Comparable to the Canon 200 f/2 II on a 5D3.

Question:
Isn't the Vello adapter a copycat of the Commlite adapter?
Or is it the other way around?
So, basically two marketing names for the same device?

K-H.

PS: Re-branded seems to be the operative phrase.

The 105mm on the A9 via Commlite adapter works well in the studio too...

Lovely, Ken, thanks for posting.

'I LOVED the nikon 105 f2.5, and that distance felt just right for me'

Many love the ~100mm lenses for portraits. It's a great compromise, less compression than 135mm, more subject-oriented than 85mm. On the 135/2 APO, its $1300 at present in 'Classic' form, quite a buy.
